Lately I have just been using the black Harley filters. Only $6 bucks at the local dealership.
I've changed dozens of k&n and never snapped the nut. Sounds to me like you're over tightening it when you put it on.

Hand tight and one turn with the ratchet.

That will do it. Hand tighten and a then 1/4 turn only with a ratchet. Don't forget to oil the seal first

1/4 turn is nothing. I have no problem with getting the Harley filters off.

Who taught you that? That's way too tight. You hand tighten to seat the rings and then hand tighten further no more than1/2 to 3/4 turn. No wrench used on installations.

Most filters need 1/2-3/4 turn once the gasket makes contact. If you hand tighten then 1/4 is plenty. These instructions are printed on most filters instructions.

If you are hand tightening than adding a full turn with a wrench you are over tightening the filter.

I use the HD filter for two reasons. No one sells anything else locally, and I won't pay $20 for a chrome K&N anyway.

Heck, I think I paid only about $16 for the Amsoil EOM filter. Now running a ss screen cleanable tho, so no more buying them.
I use a piece of 1" pipe (closet rod) with 2 slits in one end and a long bolt thru the other, a foot of ratchet strap tucked into the slits. Sling strap umder the filter and turn the bolt in the desired direction: the best filter tool you can make.

I think a lot of guys don't change their own oil, I know most of those I used to ride with Only two of us did. I switch to KN because I like the nut on the top which makes it easy to remove and I don't do chrome any more, who the hell sees them anyways!!!
