actually HD filters at the local Harley shop are $11, but the K & N at a closer Yamaha shop was $18, the Yamaha shop was 40 miles closer so I went with the K&N, plus I like the hex head nut on the end. (Both were Chrome)

Default K&P Engineering Oil Filter

We have K&P Engineering's Stainless Steel Micronic Oil Filter on both of our bikes and stand by them 100%. They not only keep the oil cooler, increase flow rate and provide great filtration but they are cleanable and reusable.

Plus, they are pretty kick *** looking as you can get them in chrome, black and diamond cut.

They are a bit pricy but considering you'll never have to buy another one they are well worth the investment.

Two attempts now to contact Purolator tech with my questions about backflow preventer and bypass in the MC filters for TC engines and no response yet. You'd think they don't care to sell filters.
Edit: Good News! I rattled their cage a bit and got an answer, and it is GOOD!
Part Number: ML16822

Specifications: Anti-Drain Back Valve Yes Height 3.36 O.D. 2.98 Relief Valve P.S.I. 12-15 Thread Pitch UNF-2B Threads 3/4-16 Type of Filter Spin-on This will be my next filter, due to meeting Harley specs, total filtering at idle pressures, and synthetic media with the pureone performance. I have some black spray paint if it needs it. And some other ideas too.

I just installed the K&P engineering cleanable oil filter and so far it I like it. The filter warms up much faster as it flows more oil then any paper filter, like 7 times more so the filter will pass heat faster and keep it cooler. Some out here that uses it claims some 5 deg cooler and for sure on the TC the more the better.

I call BS on their claims. When you pass water or oil at a higher rate of speed through a radiator (something MADE for cooling), the medium does not stay in the device long enough to cool and therefore gets HOTTER, by way of the time it spends in the engine.
That is the other reason we have thermostats, to SLOW down the fluids so they have time to cool.
If you don't believe me, take out your thermostat in your car in summer and watch what happens.

Filters are rated by size of particles they remove. The Harley filter is 32 microns if I am not mistaken. That is not a really great particle remover but is great for flow. You can check with the supplier on the size of particles that are trapped. I would not reccomend to great of a reduction in size because of the need to maintain flow. I use a wix at half the price, available at most auto parts dealers.

Here's what I'm using, and I love em. Got one on my 06 XL1200, and my 08 FXSTC.
