Default Penzoil Long Life 15W-40

Back in 1998, I bought 2-3cases of Penzoil Long Life 15W-40 for my diesel car. Then got smarter on forums like these and bought Delo 15W-40 dino and then AMSOIL synthetic 15W-40. Bottom line is that I still have the Penzoil dino oil and after reading some ofthe posts on oil in this forum, I thought that this oil would work in my 2006 Softail Deuce for the clutch.

What do you think??

Look on the bottle label if it's rated API SJ/CH4 then it will have about 118 ppm of moly (based on an older VOA) which I would not use in a wet clutch. You could probably use it in the engine as a substitute though but don't run it over 3000 miles. FWIW, HD syn3 has <5ppm moly which would be a better choice. Some people will disagree with the moly issue but I would not use it. Use it in your car.

I just checked a bottle and it has the following:

API Service CH-4, CG-4, CF-4, CF/SH, SJ.

So that means moly is there??

That oil has a VOA (virgin oil analysis) posted on the Oil Drop Server (BITOG) and shows 118ppm moly. It meets HD spec for a substitute oil for your engine. You could use it in the primary but I don't like using any oils with moly because it can cause clutch slippage. It is a very good engine oil for any heavy duty application. But if you bought it 10 years ago youare past Pennzoils recommended shelf life which is 60 months. Use one bottle and when you empty it out look in the empty bottle and see if there is a dark residue on the bottom which would indicate that some of the additives have fallen out of suspension. If not, I would use it all ASAP.

I wouldn't use it for the primary. Delo 400 also contains moly.

You could use Shell Rotella T.

I personally wouldn't put 10 year old oil in anything I owned. IMHO.

I would throw it out. A buddy of mine works as an automotive machinist and did his own little test. He asked his customers which oil they were using when they brought motor work to him. He told me the customers that said they used Penzoil had the most wear and the most sludge by far out of all the other oils. I wouldn't even use it in my lawn mower.
