Default k&p oil filter

just my 30yrs experience as MC mechanic imfo on k&p filter (also sold as Scotts performance)
; up to 60% more flow than the BEST paper filter .which means when your oil is cold its not being sent though the bypass valve and not being filtered
;dropped my average oil temp 10 degrees because housing is like a little oil cooler
;last but not least in the past 6 yrs I havethrown any oil filters in the garbage because they TOTALLY WASHABLE and can be taken to your next bike because the filter lasts forever just like the old days before some enviropig decided he could sell you a new one every oil change
and yes I have one on my FLHTc,FXSTc, and both my truck wifes car

this the best product I have seen in years ( and no I don`t have any stocks in the companyHA HA)

I think this filters seem a good option for a bike. I just wonder if the chrome of the chromed one will be good to last for years. For those of you who want more information, here you have the link:

I looked at the website and couldn't find a spec for the level of filtration which is a critical factor on a Harley engine. (MoCo wants 5 micron filtration). Plus for the price, I can buy 12 or 13 HD filters which will last me until 2020. But since they don't publish their filtration spec I wouldn't buy one.

I found this in their FAQ's section (I underlined where I think they're making their claim for particulate size):
We sent several common brands of paper filter material off to have them tested for the size of particles they would catch. We sent the material off with no names, just numbers for identification so the lab wouldn't have any idea what brand filter they were testing. The results we got back showed that the smallest particle the various material samples caught ranged between 9 and 20 microns. The LARGEST particle that was allowed to pass through ranged from 56 for the best filter to over 300 microns for the worst filter. Paper filters are rated on averages, percentages and multiple passes, so a 10 micron rated paper filter may be letting particles 50 microns and larger through. The medical grade stainless steel cloth that we use is consistent across the entire surface and is rated at 35 microns, meaning nothing larger than 35 microns should pass through the material. This type of filter material is also used in medical applications like blood filtration. Bottom line is paper is rated differently than the stainless cloth and either one works to filter your oil. Personally I like the idea of keeping the big stuff out of the engine.

The HD filters are rated at 5 microns which is about twice the size of a red blood cell. They used to be 10 micron but changed for the TC88 to 5. Which means nothing bigger than 25 microns should pass through. This is all a lot of technical mumbo jumbo but if you research the subject there are not many spin on filters out there that have a 5 micron rating. Plus does that filter have an anti-drainback valve?

hey you are not listening.what the facts say is that harleys 5 micron filter can let particales much larger get buy .the k&p is medical absolute. and the biggest point is at 60% more flow your bypass valve may never come on therefore filtering all the oil.did you know on a cold morning the best paper filter only filters 50 to 60% of your oil guess the microns don't matter then .the drain back valve is useless and I have proven on many customersTwin Cams equiped with an oil pressure guage that that guage actually reacts quicker withthe k&p installed.I have one customer with 230,000 klms on his filter and motor.so next cold start up think about all the oil thats not getting cleaned

100,000-150,000+ miles on HD engines is commonplace today, accomplished with plain $8 HD paper filters. Makes it kinda hard to justify the big price tag for what amounts to just another shiny add-on...

Just something to think about: with filters, two terms come to mind - nominal and absolute. When HD recommends the use of a 5 micron filter, they're giving you a "nominal", or let's say "target", filtering size. And a "5 micron filter" can catch particulates of that size, but not all the time. The "absolute" figure is the size, in mircrons, that just flat won't make it through the filter. CAT makes one of the best filters on the market, and it's a 5 micron filter. It's 5 nominal, but tested at 22 absolute. So it's very likely that this k&p will do every bit as well as your HD filter over the long run. What would be interestingis to get some BETA Rating test data on that and all the other high end filters. Doubt ANY filter company will share that one though.
Disclaimer: I don't work for K&P, I don't endorse any filters, and I don't have a K&P. Just thought I'd throw out some stuff I picked up on the way to being an oil junky

well keep tossing all those oil filters in garbage and let your grand kids deal with it.just imagine if every vehicle used a washable filterhow much room we would have in the land fill.don't you think it's a waste if there's an alternative that even works better

oh and sorry to disagree but 100,000 to 150,000 miles isn't common just read all motor related threads .
