RE: Oil Temp 88 vs 96
Just for information and hope it might help.
LEAN RUNNING SYMPTOMS.....................
1) Hesitation when throttle is increased
2) Engine detonates (knocks) under accelleration
3) Runs "jerky" or surges at steady throttle
4) Engine "spits back" or backfires through the intake
5) Runs POORLY WHEN COLD, BETTER AS IT WARMS UP
6) Exhaust pipe deposits are light grey
7) Lower fuel consumption than normal
8) Stark white spark plugs or cracked or metallic deposits (detonation)
RICH RUNNING SYMPTOMS
1) Emits black smoke, evenwhen warmed up
2) "Babbles" or stumbles when throttle is opened up
3) Fouls plugs
4) RUNS BETTER COLD THAN WHEN WARMED UP
5) Exhaust pipe deposits are dark or black
6) Spark plug sooty black
7) Stumbles (rich) at steady throttle (babbles)
8) Fuel use abnormally high
Just a quick guide to where to start to look for improvement.
EZ

RE: Oil Temp 88 vs 96
Never owned an 88, so I can't compare, but oil temps in my '07 SG (96") run as follows:
Winter riding (45-80° air temps): Normally 150-180°, max 190°
Summer (85-95° air temps): Normally 200-210° when moving, hitting 230° twice last summer in heavy traffic and very hot conditions.
I have an oil cooler with thermostat and use synthetic oil. I normally run a rather lean PCIII map tweaked for mileage in the cruise range, but when the going gets hot I switch to a rich map to cool things down. This is done with a PC multi-function hub and map switch, which allows me to run a bit leaner than usual for mileage and be able to switch on the fly when needed.
