Time for 1k service
So, its time for me to do my 1k service, i'm going to pick up a service manual, but i am unsure of what oil to use, motor, trans, primary? now, i want quality, i'm not going to skimp there, but i do want to know where i can get a good deal on the oil too. This is for a 2006 XL1200R.

RE: Time for 1k service
So, after more research, it seems there is no primary to change in a sportster, is this true? if so what about using Mobil 1 V-Twin 20w50 in the motor and redline shockproof in the tranny, i am unsure of what weight i should use for the redline. Can i get some advice i could sure use it...

The service manual and even the owners manual will tell you the weight or viscosity level. I use amsoil 20w50 for the engine. 75-90 for the transmission and harleys primary oil in that hole.

RE: Time for 1k service
There is a lot of stuff that needs to happen on the first service. It's not just an oil change.
I am a mechanic and decided to take it to a dealer. First service including synthetic oil cost me $230. They did the safety recall at the same time and gave me the trans service off.

RE: Time for 1k service
I did my 1k service on my 05 sporty. No big deal just read the service manual and as long as you have the proper tools then you are good. I used regular oil (20w-50) instead of syn for now and im switching back to regular primary oil. Didnt like the syn in the tranny. good luck and have fun.
