Default Oil Filter

Does anyone know who makes the oil filters for Harley? I recently placed a Fram filer (PH6022) on the bike and am now questioning my choice. Based on polls, it appears that the Harley filter is the most popular. But is it because of convenience while at a dealership or is there a significant difference in its quality?

HD filters are quality filters. There are other filters that are as good, or even better. Fram isn't one of them. I'm not sure, but I doubt the Fram filters down as low as HD wants on these new engines. If you don't want to use the HD filter (and they are over-priced - imagine that) try a Wix or NAPA Gold. Others will chime in here, too. There are certainly some good filters available.

I can tell you that Fram is about the worst filter there is, even for a car! Next choice down I would use a Purolator PL10241 or a K&N 171B (black) or C (chrome)Mobil 1 has a filter M102 I believe.

About the only thing I would add is make sure the bypass spring rating and the micron rating on the aftermarket filters are comparable to the stock filter. Many have higher rated bypass valves than the stock filter, which allows the filter to clog more before bypassing. And, as I learned while researching the specs on many of these filters a few months ago, a lot of them are 19-micron instead of the 5-10 micron HD recommends for the TwinCam engines.

Thanks to all. I will be replacing the Fram with a HD filter. As a result of this forum I have changed by philosophy about the use of engine oils and filter. THANKS!

I got these links from a guy on another forum on the same subject. I'm using a K&N filter and I'm not too worried about it, but there's some good info here if you interested

Excellent point......I agree. You want the 10 micron filtration in a Vtwin engine which has a lot loosertolerances than an automotive engine.
