Oil Change experience using the Scavenger Method
All went well and I really am happy with the oil change.
32 oz of dirty syn 3 oil came out as expected before the clean Mobil 1 VTwin started to flow.
The only thing I have to say is, I was not expecting the mess of oil overflow from the oil filter removal and install.
I took all the precautions to be as clean as poosible but still ended up with a few spills.
The bike was level on a jack standand all the oil had drained from drain plug.
I then removed the oil filter using the 2 litre soda pop container trick which also worked well. As I removed the soda pop container with the old oil filter nicely cradled in side, I did not expect oil to overflow the oil filter engine openning.
I had nothing underneath the bike to catch the overflow and was pissed off that I did not have the scavenger plug close by...no rag either.
Is that supose to happen? The bike was level, the oil was all drained out from the drain plug, yet oil still came out of the engine oil filter openning?
So I cleaned it up the best I could.
After I had pumped out remainingdirty oil using the scavenger methodfrom the disconnected return line, I removed the scavenger puck. This time I had the new oil filter close by with a few rags ready. Even though I was quick I still managed to have enough oil flow out again to cause a mess!!! before getting the new filter screwed on.
Anything I could do better next time?

Its seems no matter how carefull you try to be when changing oil you cant help but spill some. so what I do to try to minimise the mess is to have a bunch of rags stuffed where I think the oil will go, and I put a used pizza box under the drain pan so if some gets by the pan at least it falls in the pizza box.

This is common onmost machinery and is the reason, for instance, why your tranny may whine with one oil and not with another...

Sundancewind,

I just took my Road King Classic in for an Oil Chang with Amsoil to a Harley Dealer close by. \\; Amsoil isn't the problem, the cost of $118.00 was the problem. \\; Over $50.00 for the oil, $14.00 for the chrome filter and $42.50 for labor.
 \\;
I am convinced I should change my own oil and filter. \\; Is it too much of a headache or should I try to save a few dollars?
 \\;
It is difficult for me to think that \\;an $85.00 an hour tech has to change oil in a bike..............Struens
