20W50 In All (3) Holes
Gentlemen. Does anyone? Please advise. I own a 07 Ultra Classic.Truth be told, it's powered with a conventional pushrodengine with a wet-plate-clutch.My driving is mostly 60 mphin ambient air temperatures of 50-80 degrees. The price of HD packaged oil seems to me to be exorbitant! I love my HD but truth be told, compared to the Japaneseengines the HD powerplant is archaic; fuel injection notwithstanding. The Japanese engines seem to work fine with a common crankcase for clutch, transmission and engine.I don't evenwant to get into synthetic vs. mineral oils but I'd be interested in youropinions. Finally, I understand that gear-oil is measuredon a different scale thatin the final analysis, is akin to 20w50. I'm watching CNN while I type this ....... my sympathy goes out tothose displaced folks living in California ........what a disaster!!

Whatever you do......always use a gear oil in the transmission. Engine oil such as 20w50 as no business being in there. Harley transmissions were designed to use gear lube with a GL5 rating. Synthetic or dino....doesn't really matter in this case.
Engine oil......if I were to use synthetic today. I would probably use Mobile One 15w50 from Walmart. It is much less than Mobile One Vtwin and can be found in more places if needed. However, regular Harley 20w50 is perfectly fine. The main thing.....change it like you are suppose to and you'll be fine.
Primary.....Doesn't need anything special here at all. Regular Dino 10w40 through 20w50 work just fine in here. ATF works pretty good as well.....especially if you ever develop a leak.
For me.....
Gear Oil in the transmission
Engine oil in the engine
ATF in the primary
Each one of these fluids is distintive from another one. If I have a leak on the ground....I'll know exactly what is leaking. Because, there is no way to get these fluids confused.

Well,... I would suggest Mobil1 V-Twin 20w50 in the engine and primary, and Mobil1 75w90 synthetic gear oil in the tranny. Yes,... the Mobil1 V-Twin oil and Mobil1 synthetic gear is a lil more expensive but its definately worth it. Also,..... Why woulda personNOT settle ontheir choice of bike and then settle on some cheap oil to put in it. My suggestion is not just my opinion,....... if you do a search on this forum you will see that its consistantly rated as one of the top choices and even a test conducted by Amsoil showed it to be a great oil. I also like Amsoil but its just a lil more difficult for me to get in my area.

Having said that, I run Mobil 1 15W-50 synthetic in the engine, Redline Shockproof Heavy in the tranny, and Formula + in the primary. But- I would have no reservations about running one oil in all three if I had to...

Evorider,
I was under the belief that Evo transmissions only require a GL1 rated gear oil. FWIW, AMSOIL MCV 20W50 has been tested and rated at GL1. I do stand to be corrected.
I'm not an AMSOIL rep. I do use AMSOIL MCV 20W50 in all three holes with no problems.
Here in Australia, in my neck of the woods, we have just gone through massive fires and then floods. I empathise with the people in SoCal. All the best guys.
Cheers.

All together now......
Engine oil in the engine and gear oil in the trans.
Here's something better than anything I have ever tried in the trans. Once you try it you'll never go back!

Well, I guess that cuts to the chase - brutal but true! I plan to do engine oil/filter changes regularly. Sooooooooo I think I'll go with a good quality (20/50) synthetic in that hole.I understand synthetic's can tolerate heat more effectively (than so-called Dino)- over 300 degrees is touted! I will usea gear oil for the transmission andprobably aHDproduct for the primary.Redline products sound interesting, as does Amsoil. Anyway, thanks for the gen.
