Default Oil Cooler - Detonation (pinging)

I am getting some slight pinging (engine detonation) when I hit the throttle hard at 70 to 80 to pass. A roll-on the throttle will not do it - must hit it hard. Keeping the rpms up seems to help. I just installed a colder set of plugs (NGK iridium) - still getting the ping.

Does anyone know if installing an oil cooler would help - keeping engine temps down and all?

Thanks

Not sure, but I'd have to say probably not. Usually, detonation,(spark knock) is caused by too low octane fuel, or timing that is off,(though I can't remember if it's too advanced or too retarded).

Time set to high or advanced causes pinging. Try different gas.I put amsoil 20W50 in mine.Seemed to cool it down somewhat.

An oil cooler may reduce it a little as it will cool the engine a bit, but a better solution for about half the cost is to add an EFI controller. You can get a V&H Fuel Pak for about $180 new off Ebay and it will eliminate all of the detonation by richening the air-fuel mixture, which serves to lower operating temps.
You could then look at adding an oil cooler just to lower oil temps a bit more if you want...

You didn't say if you were using an EFI controller (PCIII, etc.), but if so check the ignition-advance table for advance in the cruise range at 100% TP. Mine is, but I'm not having any denation issues, so they're staying as-is. If you see any changes toward more ignition advance at full-throttle from 2k-3k, reduce it to zero or even lower.

I like the idea of reducing engine temperatures even if detonation isn't an issue, and think oil coolers are necessities on TC's rather than luxuries.
