You all might laugh but , back in the 80s I had a friend that only add oil to his bike .
My '73 IH blew enough oil out the breather hose I used it for a chain oiler. Adding enough oil to be a change every 3000 miles. I never left home without at least a qt. in the bags. It didn't even have a filter.
One size OCIs fits all is about as foolish as one oil fits all with the vastly different riding styles/habits and stock vs high compression builds. Synthetic vs conventional too. I prefer a conventional or semi synthetic because they handle shock load better. It's why synthetics are noisier. I also run a race oil not so high in detergents because detergents affect protection so I change mine every 3000 miles. I also do a lot of short hopping. Stop and start and ride it like I stole it. Big difference from someone that does all highway miles and long trips in his low compression stock bike which is what the FSM assumes. My bike is for the fun factor not transportation. I would destroy an oil in 10,000 miles. I don't care what it is.
There are several factors that determine how many miles your oil is good for.and how often you should change it. Whether it's amsoil or not isn't one if them.
I wonder how many miles it takes for the oil filter to degrade to the point of the bypass opening up in the filter.

The worse scenario is the coated paper filter element ages to the point where it starts to crumble (think: an old newspaper, if you know what they are lol). This defeats the point of the oil filter - the crumbled element turns into a bypass.
I try to use synthetic (fiberglass) filter media whenever I can find it. Then it doesn't matter how long the oil filter sits on a shelf.
There is one on Amazon I can't remember the name of off hand that I use.
I use Lucas oil. 20W50 for engine, and Lucas gear oil and trans oil. I do 5K on 2 hole, and then 10K on 3 hole.
Since you’re bringing up my favorite oil . www.summitracing.com Has got a great deal on the Lucas synthetic 20/50 motorcycle oil right now . Just to give you a heads up .
