Default Help, Can I use Auto oil in my HD?

I was looking for an oil grade that suits the weather in my country ( 95-125 in summer & 45-95 in winter) I only found 1 oil, which is Castrol Syn 10W60 Auto oil used for high rev engines in some BMW cars. Can I use this oil or it would be harmful for my ride??

You need an oil designed for air cooled engines. I would recommend Amsoil 20w50.

I think using auto oil is fine. Redline makes MC oil that you can order that is a 20/60 for high temp. use in V Twins. The 10/60 is a wider range and I haven't seen any specs. BUT the Redline stuff is a Group V, meaning it has the best heat handling characteristics currently available. It claims to have double the resistance to oxidation compared to 20/50. The Castrol 10/60 may also have a much better resistance than any 20/50, seems logical but can't say for sure. I would suggest shorter change intervals when you are in the 125 type weather as an extra insurance against breakdown.

EZ

"You need an oil designed for air cooled engines. I would recommend Amsoil 20w50. "...............Not trying to start an argument but I totally disagree with this statement. Not the Amsoil part, but the NEED part. Tests have shown no significant advantage of MC specific oil over car oils of the same quality. Comparisons between Mobile One MC specific 20/50 and car specific 15/50 have proven this, to me at least. Designating an oil as MC specific is, IMHO, a way to charge more than would otherwise be competitive with other products. The benefits are mainly for the bottler.

With the temps that you are living in, I'd have no problem using the Castrol synthetic 10w-60 that is available to you.

Be careful using straight weight oils marked "Racing". Some of them are intended for limited milage use in engines that get torn down and rebuilt frequently. They do NOT all have the detergents and other additives needed for use as a regular lube in an air cooled engine. Some straight weight oils, however, are intended for extended use. Just make sure the one you use is and don't think "racing" equals better.
