I was thinking the primary held 1 quart. The owners manual for a 1997 heritage softail classic says primary 38-44oz.

Is that maybe only if you have the whole primary taken off the bike?

Thanks.

Typically they give it two amounts...a wet change and a dry change...where the inner primary was removed. I just trust my eye and fill to just barely the bottom of the clutch basket, it's usually right around a quart.

Fill to the bottom of the clutch basket and call it good.

My 2018 Heritage service manual says to set the level at the bottom of the clutch basket, also. Don't do this with the bike on the jiffy stand. Bike must be upright to set the level correctly.

Mine says this too. No wet measurement is given, but I think there's an actual inch measurement
from the center of the clutch adjusting nut to the top of the fluid.

Yes, what the second amount is for . In your case , with bike held level, for maintenance, 38 oz will bring it up to the bottom lip of the plate your clutch springs set in.

On newer models, to the bottom edge of the diaphragm spring.

Most do not need 38 oz to do that. Two quarts will have a little left over when you do primary and transmission. Use non detergent gear oil like Harley's Formula plus.

It works well in all temperature ranges. No filters, so that's why you need non detergent.
