Default Oil Temps?

My scoot seems to be cooking the oil, at least to me. The cylinders were bored to a 95" and I run Mobil 1.

Is there a temp that would be considered too high? I installed an oil temp guage in the fairing and from what I can tell, steady cruising I'm running about 220*.

Maybe it's in my head but I think that's HOT for a TC.

If it matters...I'm running a 175 main jet in the carb and the Crane adjustable ignition is advanced to the number 5. I'm not sure if these matter but I wanted to inform you guys in case you had any ideas.

Thanks!
Chris

Actually 220 isn't bad for example Redline's 20w50 isn't recommended for engines with continuous operating temperatures on less than 225. Note that while your gage reads 220 the oil running through upper end will be much hotter than that from the bottom and the gage reading is at best just an average of the various lubrications points.

Actually, HD has at times listed 230 as "normal" for a TC88 running properly. Mobil one,as a synthetic oil can withstand temperatures much higherbefore significant degradation will occur.

Use that 220 as a baseline and watch for when the temp gets higher. Usually climbing a long grade, really hot weather or cruising above 80. In Florida, in heavy traffic, 260 is pretty common for me. I run Redline 20/60 because of the high temps and don't worry too much about it.

220 is just fine. When runnin dino HD oil I was hittin 230+ on the highway on a hot day. I was like.. WTF!!! Switched to Royal Purple Syn and it runs around 10 degrees cooler. Did some research and like Ez said.. 230 is "operating temp" for our bikes. My buddy has an '07 Softail and his manual says 270 is normal... little hot if ya ask me. Your running Mobil1 at 220? You have no worries at all.

220-230 is pretty typical.

Like these guys said- 220 is fine- especially for a top of the line oil like Mobil 1. In the '07 Service Manual for touring models they spec the normal operating oil temp at 230 degrees, & the '06's are likely close to this or the same.
You could always add an oil cooler if you want to drop it another 15-30 degrees...

I'm also running an '07 softtail, and with Redlinewould hitaround 230, but normally ran around 215. I've since switched to another brand of oil (one that's never been mentioned on this forum), and consistently run 200. Hit 206 once with my wife on, travelling up over the Cascade mountain range at about 75 MPH. No other changes, just the oil.

I'd like to know as well. Never heard of any oil that could drop temps 15-30 degrees lower than Redline. Must be something special if it can outperform a Group V synthetic... [sm=confused06.gif]
