Default oil change

I know this has probably been ask a thousand times,
I cant figure out how to change the oil in my 1984 Sporster.
It is the Iron head 1000
I have located the oil filter and the drain plug but when I drain the oil out of the engine there is still oil in the oil tank.
I also cant find any information on how much oil and where to put it.
Any help would be greatly appreciated
Thanks
Kevin

I think there is a seperate plug to drain the transmission. And I THINK it is 3.3 quarts of oil.

Maybe start at 2 quarets and go from there.

There is no oil to drain from the engine, practically speaking. In fact, it's generally a bad idea to pop the plug out of the crankcases. HDs are dry sump engines, meaning all the oil is carried in the oil bag. Drain the oil from the oil tank, refill it with whatever quantity specified in your service manual (You do have a service manual, right?). Transmission & primary share oil. Drain is on lower side of primary. Refill with amount specified in service manual (You do have a service manual, right? Oh yeah, I've already asked that. Get my drift?).
