Default Oil Leak

Recently had oil changed on my 97 dyna. Have developed leak that I think is comming out of main vent tube. I leaks only when running. Checked oil and was over full. Drained about 12oz. out.

Can to much oil cause a leak out the vent? Has anyone experenced this?

Too much oil can do what you've described.

Default RE: Oil Leak

I had a similar problem - I went on a run around the southwest, about 2500 miles - no problem. Back in LA I had the bike (2000 Fatboy) serviced with oil change - took off on another trip two weeks later - this time I notice oil on the oil tank, the pipes and around the push rod covers by the time I get to San Francisco (about 475 miles) problem continued up the Oregon coast, but not bad enough to cause a lot of concern and oil level seemed to stay the same - In Oregon, my riding buddy and I compared oil levels (his is a 2003 Fatboy which he had also just changed the oil in before we left - same dealer) and his showed a lot lower on the stick - He went on to Spokane and I returned to LA, about 1000 miles - problem seemed to go mostly away - I am assuming they overfilled the oil at the dealer - I've been going to them for 16 years, so i would be interested to hear what they say. I cleaned up the bike and am going to take it out for an extended run to see if the problem returnes before I approach them - any ideas?

Remember to idle the bike for a couple of minutes BEFORE you check your oil hot. Otherwise the level can give you a false "Low" reading. The pump needs to scavenge the oil and return it to the oil pan or tank BEFORE you can get a true level reading. Also always take your readings on level ground, preferably the same spot if you are really **** about it. Running a half qt. low won't hurt anything and is better than constantly puking oil out of the AC.
