Oil Change Overfill

Oil Change Overfill
Well, I changed the oil (and oil filter) in my wife's 2005 FLSTNI as part of the 5,000 mile service.
The book says 3.5 qts of oil, and like my truck and car, I added that amount. I took the bike for a quick spin to get the oil warm to check it. When I got back, the oil was way over FULL...I had to drain close to 1/2 qt!
Anyone else have this probem? Is that much oil "hidden" inside the lines and other engine components?
Thanks,
Jason

RE: Oil Change Overfill
Saw the same thing in my 06 FLSTCI and have heard similar stories all over. I have a turkey baster syringe with a modified needle to suck the excess out.

The quantities printed in the manual are for a "factory dry" engine. An oil change will require about 1/2 quart less. I always install 1 quart less than the manual and warm up the engine. Then add oil as necessary to top off.

Chief, I first grabbed the turkey baster and my wife caught me as I walked out the door into the garage with her baster...never again will I get CAUGHT. Tomorrow, I will go buy my own turkey baster!
I just emptied the excess oil using the drain plug a bit at a time, checking repeatedly.
