Default does anyone else notice this?

Just changed motor oil to mobil 1, and when riding I get the smell of oil when I stop at a light. I've checked for any leaks or where I might have spilled some everythings clean. so my question is wheres this smell coming from?,,,,

I don't think the brand/type of oil matters, I get it sometimes after a hard run, probably from the air filter, via the breathers. Nothing to worry about unless you air filter is oily in which case check you didn't overfill on the last change.

Or perhaps you have some oil spillage in the filter area from your oil change that hasn't all dripped or burned away yet. It's hard to get every bit of that oil cleaned up after changing filters.

The post above is a good point also... Could just be from the breather/air cleaner area.

well I guess it could be comming from the breather which is stock, as is the rest of the bike. I just got the bike a month ago, and before I picked it up it had a 10k service at which time the previous owner had them use 20/50 dino in it. I didnt notice the smell until I changed it to mobil1 so it must be that.I checked the breather, dry as a bone.Hmmmm???

The only thing I smell from time to time is gas. At one point I thought for sure my bike had a gas leak.

It is either residual from the oil change burning off OR you may have a small leak reaching a pipe or hot spot. If you were buning it (change from dino to syn) you could see the smoke if it were strong enough to smell. Oil in the breather is liquid and I have never known it to have a strong odor but rather just messes up the bike and your jeans unless it drips on the exhaust, then you'd see the residue.

Start the bike in the dark and check for smoke with a flashlight. Smoke will show up much better in the dark, illuminated with a narrow light.

I have a similar experience. I changed out to mobil-1 synth in the primary and engine and left the tranny at HD+ (since we can't get the gear oil over here). I often smelled oil when I was stopped at lights. I checked the filter and found it dry and have not had any weeping.

The bike is not marking its territory and no residule oil was left from the filter change.

Heres an update, was checking around various spots on the bike with a flashlight, and saw what apears to be wetness behind the primary cover. not on the cover but on the side of the trans where it looks like the vent hose from the trans may have spit some trans oil on the case. sprayed some simple green on it and hosed it off, went for a ride and the smell was almost gone .I think another spraydown will solve this caper.

I can't tell you where the smell is coming from on your bike but here is what happened to my bike last year.

After reading all the hoopla about synthetic oils being better in the heat, I bought some Mobil 1 synthetic and tried it in my '06 Ultra. I thoroughly cleaned the bike after the oil/filter change and went for a ride. The engine made more noise than "normal" and I could smell the oil while riding the bike. When I parked the bike in the garage,I could still smell the Mobil 1 the next day. My wife even noticed the smell andasked me what it was.

Anyway, I dumped the Mobil 1 and went back to HD 360 20/50 and the engine sounded normal again and the smell went away.

I have since tried HD Syn 3 and Amsoil and neither has a "smell" that is noticable while riding - or in the garage after riding.

I have only tried Mobil 1 the one time andhad forgotten about the smell until I read your post.

I am currently using Mobil 1 synthetic75/90 gear lube in the transmission and have not noticed any different smell, nor any difference in the bike than fromusing HD Formula + in the transmission.

I get the smell when my air filter is dirty (breathers).

Learned a good trick from a friend to prevent spillage when removing the oil filter. Get a 1/2 gal milk jug and clean it up, cut it so it look like a scoop, slide it under the filter when you remove it and the excess oil runs into it instead of all over you engine. Gets 99.5% of the excess.
