Default Yes another lousy oil thread

15' Limited Stage 1 w/ 21,000 miles is due for a 3 hole fluid change. Was told by Harley tech when I bought then bike new, not to waste money putting Syn3 oil in her. Said the dino oil was more than okay for the bike. I have changed the motor and primary every 3,000 miles and tranny every 6,000.

Now I'm considering going to the Mobile 1 full syn for motorcycles. Heck of a lot cheaper. I want to increase the intervals to 5,000 on motor and primary. Do the
trans at 10,000. I still plan on using the HD primary plus oil for trans and primary.

Anyone see any issue with a bike that has ran HD dino since new being switch to synthetic? I'm just wanting to ride more and change oil less. averaging 4 oil changes per year.

I know everyone has a after market oil they prefer, but that is not my question. Just want to make sure I'm not going to cause issues down the road.
Thanks all.

Switch to syn anytime you want. You could go 5K miles on non-syn and still be within service specs.

Yep. And that works fine regardless of type of oil. I change my trans oil at 10k when I do the primary just because it’s easy and cheap. As for synthetic vs Dino engine oil there are plenty of threads you can read about that but with a late model twin cam there is no reason not to use synthetic. It will definitely run cooler and provide better protection. Twin cams run pretty hot anyway but if you spend any time in hot weather stop and go traffic your motor will definitely thank you for running a good quality full synthetic. There are lots of opinions on here about which is the best but you really can’t go wrong with Mobil 1.

truth be told it makes zero diff!!
the whole key is maintenance!!
i have a 1974xlch with over 175k miles and ran the whole gammit of oil from 30 wt to 90 wt , i prefer straight weight oils but harder to find and i use diesel engine oil. since it had no filter, i changed at 2>3k miles and i will say, it never saw mercy, have the scars to prove it and it even ate the front end off a 1972 chevy impala. i added a filter to it a few years back and upped the change interval 1k miles. basically run my 01 sport the same way.

Synthetic or Dino you can change all you want.
Doesn't doesn't matter it's completely irrelevant and if it makes you feel any better most people don't know synthetic oil sold in the USA is simply Dino oil that's super refined.
And and quite honestly even most Dino oil has a mix of what we call synthetic in it whether it's on the label or not. They're all good and will do the job but I will say Harley-Davidson oil is formulated more like an HDEO diesel oil and why most manuals state if HD oil is not available use diesel oil. Of course and they throw in their switch back to HD oil as soon as possible...

Definitely go with synthetic It drops the temp of the engine a bit and lasts longer.

Ran Dino in my 2K Harley because Harley said not to run Synthetic. Fast forward, now Harley makes a Synthetic and they tell me to run Synthetic. So I took their advice and put in Mobil 1 V-twin and have been happy ever since. 88K and still running like new.
