Default Amsoil Rep Say's

I just got off the phone with a local amsoil rep, i was going to order 20-50 for the engine 75-90 svg for the trans and 10-40 for the primary.

He's telling me i don't need 75-90 svg for the trans (overkill)and most guy's are running 20-50 in all three holes.

now i'm totaly confused on what i should be using..the bike is a 06 rk classic with 7500 mi on it..
right now i have 20-50 amsoil in the engine and syn 3 in the trans and primary..

should i go with amsoil 20-50 in all three holes or stick with my original plan???

thanks, paul

Part of the confusion comes from the fact that Gear Oil viscosity (75-90) is not using the same scale as motor oil viscosity (20-50) In fact when you check the equal to 75-90 on the motor oil SAE scale it is similar in weight to the 20-50. That being said many on the board are running 20W-50 (mobil-1, amsoil, syn3) in all three holes. Many are doing exactly what you started doing as well. Many, like myself, are using Redline Shockproof heavy duty in the tranny as it quiets down the clatter in the 07 gearboxes. I use RedLine MTL in my primary, and Amsoil 20w-50 in the engine

Bottomline: Either option works.

IMHO, get the gear oil and if you have a noisy tranny, get the heavier weight , at least in the Summertime. Better overkill than under lubed.

Gear oil for gears, motor oil for motors and just about any decent lube for the primary which is the least critical. Cheap dino is fine there.(JMHO but lots of mechanics will agree with what I'm telling you)

Here is the Official AMSOIL Recommendation.. http://www.amsoil.com/products/stree...oil_chart.aspx You can use AMSOIL 20/50 in all three hole. Contrary to what is said here It isn't Gear oil for the trans and Motor oil for the trans. It is based on what rating the Lubricant must meet. Harley says their only require a lubricant with a GL1 rating. AMSOIL MCV 20/50 meets the GL 1 Requirement as does the Syn3.

Prior to HARLEY recommending SYN 3 for all three holes, the AMSOIL recommendation was 20/50 for the Engine 75/90 for the Transmission and 10/40 for the primary. I used this for 3 years and was very happy with it. This year I started running 20/50 in all three holes and I can't tell the difference. What others are saying about the gear noise in the 07's is true. Use 75/140 in the Trans and it will quiet it down. ANY of these three choices will work absolutely wonderful, It is just a matter of choice.

I spoke to an Amsoil rep while in an indy shop. I was looking for amsoil products and the rep happened to walk in the door. He said I could use 20w50 in all three holes, but he did like the Severe Gear a lot in the tranny. I think either way is fine, I chose to go with the gear oil for tranny and 20w50 in the engine and primary.
