Default 75w-140 OK in '07 Tranny?

Need some feedback - talked to local indie shop that is all Harley, just doesn't sell new ones, services and does everything else. Said it won't hurt and might quiet down the clatter/chatter of my tranny by putting in 75w-140 synthetic gear oil. My '07 RK Classic is a beautiful bike, but definitely having the tranny noise issue, 5th gear whine, lots of clatter and chatter, etc. At my 1000 mile a week ago at the HD dealer, I took my own oil/fluids in. Had 'em put Mobil 1 V-Twin 20w-50 synthetic in the engine and primary, and Mobil 1 75w-90 synthetic gear oil in the tranny. Man, want to take a bunch of crap from the local dealer, take your own oil That's a whole other forum tread. At any rate, smoothness in the shifting never was a problem, but it feels even better, and the engine seems a little smoother and quieter, not sure - might just be a mind trip, but just knowing I have the M1 in it makes me feel better... but the tranny noise is still there and plenty distracting on those long back road country rides... rarely even get it into 6th, but in the freeway 6th does quiet down.

So, short of the $$$ F6F Baker tranny fix, anyone have any success using 75w-140 in the tranny, and what do you know about it being OK to use?

Thanks in advance for any help here!

At my 1,000 mile service, I went with the exact combination of fluids you did with your bike.
I'm no mechanic, but I thought it might be good to break in the gears with 75W-90 before I go with 75W-140, which I'll do with the next service. Just my opinion.

75-140 is fine, especially in Summer. Either will do but the heavy stuff tends to quiet them down a bit.

The local Harley Dealer here in Stockton, CA uses the AMSOIL 75 /140 Severe Gear and it all but eliminates the Noise.

I've been using Amsoil Severe Gear 75w-140 for 8 months, or 6,000 miles. My trans. sounded like an ambulance going down the road until I started using Amsoil. Now I have no whine in 5th, but I still have the motor chatter.

Can't comment on your 07, but I changed all the fluids on my 06 Bob before I put a mile on it. 75W-140 Super-Tech full synthetic (Wal-Mart brand) went in the trans. I then proceeded to put about 170 fast break in miles on it before I leftfor a 4000 mile HWY trip. Now there's about 7000 fast Hwy miles on it and it's the sweetest, quietest H-D I've ever ridden.

edgerider...I just did the first fluid change out on a pre-owned '04 RKC I recently purchased. I used Mobile 1 5W50 in the crankcase, Mobile 1 75W140 gear lube in the Tranny, and ATF F in the Primary. I also used the a Purolator Pure One P/N PL10241, based upon discussions and extensive research one HDForum member performed. The difference in shifting was very noticable and smooth, I no longer have the loud "clunk" when putting the bike into first gear. I think it's the right combo for the bike, especially here in FLA were the summer heat is pretty oppressive. I did not find a noticible change in the perceived heat coming from the engine, it still runs hot compared to my old Evo and older Shovel.

JMHO, YMMV.

75-140 or 85-140 is no problem.

I switched to Royal Purple 85w140 and noticed an immediate and major improvement in the clatter and whine problems plaguing my '07 SG. The whine is still present in 5th, though reduced, but the clatter is nearly gone in 5th and completely gone in 6th (except when lugged <1800 RPM's). I've been assured by HD that this viscosity will do no harm to the gearbox.

I too run M1 20-50W in crank, M1 Full Syn Gear oil 75-140 in tranny, and use Redline MTL in Primary.....................noise is nill now. Enjoyable riding.
