I'm thinking about 15/50 in mine when my free services run out. I ride up until the salt trucks come out. I get off work at 2:30 in the morning so it's a little chilly. Turning over it's grunting a little when it gets in the 40's. I have 20W50 360 in it now, but it's changed every 2,500 miles.

17' FLSTC. 5,200 miles.

Thought of trying a group IV or V synthetic ? One of the characteristics of it is that it thickens less than a Dino oil when it cools. It contains NO wax. Otherwise, all oils are designed to be roughly the same viscosity at operating temps, (212 deg.), 10-15 cSt.

Check your manual, but for mine, if the ambient air temp is below 50, I can step down to a w40 oil. Now that it's getting colder, I'm looking at 0w40 Mobile1 in the engine to finish out the year, and start next year, with some easy cold starts.

interesting point here; Isn't a full synthetic just as liquidity (for lack of a better term) at lower ambient temps as it is at say 80 degrees? So would the owners manual be conventional oil minded in their statement? And if that is the case a mere 40 degree difference wouldn't matter to me using a full synthetic oil with a 15w-50...weight

At operating temp, none of it matters. Any 50 wt oil you use will be almost the same with respect to viscosity. Its during and shortly after you crank her up that the differences occur. Synthetics thicken less as temps drop and this characteristic continues beyond published 40 degree viscosity. Synthetic oil will remain thinner when cold hence be lubricating your engine better, sooner than waxy Dino oils on cold starts. Thats just one of the benefits. There are others.
