Grumpy, I am no expert in this matter but from what I have read I would NOT use car oil in your v-twin.
Been running Mobil 1 car oil for over 60k miles in mine. Not gonna change, either. The bike oil is too expensive for no appreciable difference. And the HD Syn-3 is one of the lower performing of the so-called "quality" synthetic oils.

Mobil1 for me in all three hole's, got 6300 mile's on my bike with no problem's,I'll admit it's a little high at 7.99 a qt for the v-twin oil but I believe it's worth it.

I do not personally have a lot of miles on my Harley(s) but I have been on air cooled motorcycles for many years and have always used 20W50 Dyno (deisel rated if available) and have not had any problems with them . My brother has been on Harleys exclusively for the last 25+ years and has more than 300K miles on them has also used Dyno and has not had any difficukties with it. Doubt I will spring for the higher priced syn based on what I know now. I was running Citgo Mystic 8 deisel rated in my Sporty. Haven't decided what to put in the EVO Ultra-Glide yet, but will be something easy to get at Wally world or the local Auto store. The Citgo was the only deisel rated oil I could find that had 20W50, all the rest were 20W40 and I think that to light for the air cooled motors. In my Sporty I ran a Ford oil filter that added a half quart to the oil capacity, will do the same on the Ultra if I can find one to fit.

Revtec has an HD oil they call "pure". They claim it works nearly as well as synthetic but less expensive. I bought a kit through Dennis Kirk that included three quarts and a chrome filter for twenty bucks...thought it seemed reasonable...

I plan to use AMSOIL once I reach the 1000 mile mark.

I use regular old Harley 20W-50 oil. I change the engine oil b/t every 2K and 2.5K miles. Primary and trans fluids get changed every 5K. I guess old habits die hard...

Taurusjim, 4boltsiron, and Cam it!

I modified the poll to reflect Rev Tech for your answers...any others, make a post and I will update the poll (taking your vote out of the Other column) to get a more accurate count.

Thanks!

Mac
