EVO Oil line routing to oil filter

EVO Oil line routing to oil filter
I noticed in my official Harley service manual as well as another Harley bulletin on installing an oil cooler that they show the pressure line from the oil pump going to the outside connection of the filter housing on a mid '90's EVO. They show the inner connection going to the return line. Shouldn't it be the opposite? Inspection of the filter housing shows the outside connection is coming from the center of the filter through the threaded mount. The inner connection goes to a chamber which feeds the small holes of the filter base plate. The normal operation of this type of filter is to flow under pressure through the holes in the base plate, through the pleated media, and into the center of the filter, then out the center through the threaded mount. The Harley schematic would be the opposite flow. Also, the bypass valve wouldn't work is the flow was opposite the filer's design. Am I missing something? I know I'm not the sharpest knife in the drawer.
