20w-50 Synthetic OK in Primary?
I have a 2017 Iron 883 with almost a 1000 miles and I'm doing the first oil change today
I've been reading to use the same oil in the engine in the primary
Is that correct?
I bought 6 quarts of Mobil One 20w-50 synthetic motorcycle oil and a new filter
Does that about cover it?
Thanks!

Many Harley dealers will put 20W50 in the Sportster trans during service. Harley OK it. Me personally use 75W90 gl5 gear oil. Works great for me.

You can use 20W50, but I also prefer something made for the Sporter clutch/transmission. I use Bel Ray Sport Transmission lube. Mobil 1 75W90 is also well recommended, I've used it, as is Spectro STL (Sport Trans Lube). M1 is probably the easiest to find and cheapest, but it's all your choice.

oil
I want to put my 2 cents worth in about oil. This is about sportsters only. 99 % of motorcycles on the road have gear box in as part of the engine and use one oil. some don't even have oil filters. Those engines will run over 100,000 miles on one oil, so why can't a sportster use one oil in engine and transmission? I've owned over 30 bikes over the years with this 1200T being my fifth harley. never had an oil related problem.

Do you really think an oil made to work in all three holes is the best for any of them? Think about that. Harley motors do not share a sump. The only shared sump is a sportster primary and gear box. All other models have no shared sump at all. The only reason I can possibly fathom to run the same oil, an oil designed to run in all 3 in any hole of a harley is simple laziness to use the right stuff in the right hole. Motorcycle oil isn't it for any hole. There's better options for all of them.
