Hundreds To Be Greeted By Patriot Guard Riders and SC Police Emerald Society Pipe Band For Historic Moment
History will be made, Monday, March 30th at 10:30am, as hundreds of police and military participate in the unveiling of two inspiring paintings which honor Long Island heroes during a ceremony at the William Rogers Legislature Building (725 Veterans Memorial Highway, Smithtown). Members of the Suffolk County Legislature, SC Police Department, Military and the public will be greeted by Patriot Guard Riders as they gather to witness the unveiling of “Defining Moment” and “Heroes of the SCPD.” There will be a touching performance by the SC Emerald Society Pipe Band as the paintings are introduced. Both paintings were created and donated by world renowned artist Angelo Marino, a former Air Force disabled veteran and Long Islander, to celebrate the many contributions of our soldiers and brave men and women of the SCPD. The paintings will be on display at the Legislative Offices after the ceremony.
“We are very excited to be hosting this program and invite Long Islanders to join us as we unveil these two meaningful works of art that celebrate the contributions of our police officers and those serving in our military,” said Legislator John Kennedy. “Defining Moment” was inspired by the Pulitzer Prize photo of PFC Joseph Dwyer saving an Iraqi child. Joseph Dwyer enlisted in the Army two days after September 11, 2001. He survived many battles in Iraq to return home with Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). PTSD eventually took his life, however his heroic legacy will not be forgotten.
“Heroes of the SCPD” memorializes the dedication and sacrifices of the SCPD. “We’re very proud that we are being honored in such a special way through this lasting painting,” explained Craig Vasey, Executive Director of the SCPD Memorial Fund.
According to Angelo Marino, “The paintings illustrate the true story of the heroic and benevolent nature of Long Islanders, and were inspired by the contributions these citizens have made.” “This event will be a great opportunity to celebrate the service of our military and police personnel and to show our support for those who sacrifice so we can stay safe,” said Chris Delaney founder of HeroArmyPFCJosephDwyer.com.
The program is hosted by Suffolk County Legislature, 911 Veterans, HeroArmyPFCJosephDwyer.com, SCPD Memorial Fund and Suffolk County Police Benevolent Association.
