RE: When is it too early to ride in the northeast?
it's raining today, so a lot of the salt wil lprobably wash away.
unfortunately, it's supposed to get cold & snow again, so i bet they'll salt the **** outta the roads again...
i swear that the DOT has a deal with all the local car dealers to use as much salt as possible to make cars rust faster...

RE: When is it too early to ride in the northeast?
I've been out a few times in the last two weeks here in Northwestern CT. We had a huge rain storm about two weeks ago that washed the salt away pretty good, and it's raining again now. It's unlikely that we'll get any more snow at this point, at least any that hangs around, so salting may be done for the year, and today's rain will clean the remaining salt off and melt most of the remaining snow (which is mostly gone anyway). The state no longer uses sand on state-maintained (numbered) roads, so as long as I stay off the town roads there's no sand issues.
So as long as the road is dry and the temp is above 40, I'll be out there. I did head North into MA one day last week, but turned around before I got to Otis. It was getting colder as I headed North, there was a lot more snow still on the ground up there, and it wasn't particularly sunny. So I headed back South. Have to say, I haven't seen hardly any other bikes out there yet. It's still too early to ride back and forth to work, as the early morning temps are still too low.
My bikes have always been stored at home either in a garage, shedor basement.

do you store the bikes at home also during the winter?

Yup, you got that right. For at least 2 months out of the winter.
But in fairness, when I get to the main roadsthey're pretty clear,
except for the snow we got last night and today.
Those potholes and frost heaves and sand laden corners can be tricky.
Once the sun is nearly gone the temps drop fast
then the blackice lingers around the next bend hopeing to take you down.
This is the first year in many that me and wife didn't go to Daytona,
so the cabin fever is running a high temp for both of us.
Planning the long rides for summer is what keeps mr sane, if sane is what I am?

RE: When is it too early to ride in the northeast?
MetroWest Boston Last Friday: 46' and Cloudy
2 1/2 hours:
Out Route 30, North on 127, then north past Hudson, back on 62 and 117, Waltham and back home. Saw 5 other bikes: 3BMW's, one Harley, a oversize Vespa/scooter of some sort with a lap blanket and a whoknowswhatitwasmetric.
Would go out again but it's either freezing cold or raining. Actually the more midweek rain the better to flush the roadsalt powder away.
Hoping to move "The Beast" (a 8hp 32" snowblower) to its rightful place in the BACK of the garage...
