Exclamation Warning - Problem with 21" wheel upgrade on SGS or any ABS 2014

All - Just an FYI warning - The dealer put a 21" wheel on my SGS before delivery. There is an issue with the new 14's that have ABS and linked brakes. Apparently the computer looks at the ratio of spinning on the front and rear wheels. the computer throws a code, the ABS light goes on and is disabled.
Anyone that does a 21" upgrade on a 14 with ABS will also have to upgrade their rear wheel to a 17" or 18" wheel with a specific tire to bring the ratio within specs to prevent the computer from thinking there is an issue and disabling ABS (and probably linked brakes too).
Apparently the MoCo is working on this and there may be a computer flash in the future to compensate but for now it means that you will need to change the rear wheel as well.
HogPro has been looking at this issue since Feb. and there is a great thread about it here:

Looks like the dealer will be paying for my new rear tire and rim. This is a safety issue. Thought everyone would like to know.

What we have found is you either need a 17x6.25 rear with a 200/55/17 tire or an 18x5.5 with a 180/55/18 tire in order for the ABS to function properly on 2014 ABS models with linked brakes.

If you have 2008-2013 with ABS this is not an issue, only the 2014 with ABS. If you have a 2014 without ABS it is not an issue.

Computer flash from Harley? I kind of doubt it. But time will tell. Harley would rather sell you their products only than support that after market like that.

You are correct with your information above. I just thought I would add a little to it from our experience with this thus far... The front and rear wheel have to be within 10% circumference of each other. You have to run at least a 200/55-17 rear tire for now if you're wanting a 21" front wheel. Make sure its the 55 profile, that is just enough to make it work. The 50 profile supposedly will not work but we haven't tested it here. For a 23" or 26" we have mixed reviews of it working with a 18 x 5.5 with the 200/55-18 tires but if it still messes up... you can buy a brake line and run it directly to your master cylinder and bypass the ABS module. That is what a couple different companies are doing including us until there is a software patch or some other type of fix.

Also... We sell the block off plug and brake line you need to bypass the ABS and have normal brakes for a while until their is some type of aftermarket software or fix where you can re-enable them. However, you could get these parts at any local store as well that will take a minute for you to measure them.

We are yet to have a 23" work regardless of the size of the rear wheel. The Vee rubber 23" is a lower profile than the Avon so maybe that will work but I don't know on that. Can you expound on how to eliminate the ABS WanaRyd? This is the first I have heard of this being possible.

For now you have two options.... A - Disable the ABS altogether by using a plug on the module and running the brake line directly to the master cylinder. B - Pony up and buy the rear 17" wheel too or C - Wait until the aftermarket wheel industry pulls together and develops a solution. (It will happen... just needs time.)

For now... I of course would say B is the best option! haha

As I stated earlier "For a 23" or 26" we have mixed reviews of it working with a 18 x 5.5 with the 200/55-18 tires" ... some customers have done the reset on their ABS like PM recommends and gotten it working fine. Others have had it still mess up and in this case we sold them our ABS block off and a line kit.

We are yet to have the "reset" work on any bike.
