Default Billings MT to Spearfish SD

Little help please. This summer I am flying out to Billings MT from NJ and renting From beartooth Harley. I am planning to ride to Spearfish SD then to Sturgis. On the map I am looking at taking 212 east rather than 90. Im just looking for a little feedback on this ride and availability of fuel on this route. I am unfamilar with Montana and on the map it doesnt look like there is much in the way of fuel and restraunts. Any info would be appreciated. Thanks

You will need a large caliber rifle to shoot buffalo on the way in order to feed and defend yourself. Bring coffee and Pork & Beans, too, in case hunting is bad.

But, seriously, taking I-90 instead of 212 might be a better trip. It's 4 lane, but little or no traffic and the scenery is good (Custer Battlefield, Devil's Tower, Big Horn Mountains). More people live in your neighborhood than in Montana & Wyoming combined. Food and fuel are not usually an issue. Good food, howver, is.

Check in with me this spring - I'll make a trial run down 212; never gone that route before (it is a bit desolate, to say the least, and I'm always looking for a road trip)

I havn't been there in a while. But, as I recall, it's a decent ride. eastern MT and WY are mostly rolling grasss land. Don't expect great scenery. But it's a nice back road through small farming/ranching communities. I would go that route over I-90 in a heartbeat.

It's only about 200 miles from Crow Agency to Spearfish (freeway to freeway). Gas isn't really an issue. You'll only need one fuel stop.

You could also go from Billings to Red Lodge, down to Cody, WY and then over to Buffalo, WY, and then back on I-90. Longer but you get to see the mountains up close. From Gillette, WY can go to Spearfish or you could drop south to Custer, SD and then back north thru the Black Hills into Spearfish. All depends on time. I've done this ride a couple of times (but going from east to west) and this is the way that I went.
