How does this work ? Why is it so expensive, compared to a SERT, or a PCIII ?

How does it work?
Unlike the PCIII this system is not a "patch" to the factory ECU.
It is a complete ECU replacement that uses wideband O2 sensors.

Unlike the SERT this system is not a modified, but still static, map to the factory ECU.
It is a ECU replacement that uses a map that is continually adjusted by the wideband O2 sensors.

This allows the ECU to dynamically adjust the fuel injection, timing, etc for optimum performance. (Closed loop)
The OEM system relies on static information (maps) that do not adjust to changing riding conditions. (Open loop)
In other words, the content of the exhaust gases (too rich/lean) directly affects and makes changes to the intake mixture and ignition timing to correct any rich/lean condition.

Why so expensive?
Instead of being an add-on device, this system completely replaces the Delphi OEM static ECU/FI system.
The price includes new "wideband" O2 sensors to replace the factory "narrowband" sensors.
The price also includes a wideband O2 sensor controller to preheat the sensors and provide the interface to the new ECU.

This little post is not intended to be a definitive article on "open" vs "closed" loop ignition systems, there's plenty of detailed reading on the subject on the Internet.

Thanks for the info. Sounds like something that should come on all F.I. Harleys from the factory.

Does this system work after being installed on the first bike? I know that the Harley downloads are coded to the bike they are used on and can't be used again.
If this can be used on another bike let me know, because I want to buy it, if you still have it.
