Default Insurance went up 200%...?

I used to pay $255 per year with Progressive for full coverage on my 2008 Ultra Classic.

No tickets or wrecks on my record (or in my life as an adult).

in July of 2011, I was backing out on my father's land and forgot that i still had his trailer hooked to my truck.... backed up..... and boom goes the dynamite.

Caused about $500 damage to the trailer and about $1300 to the truck.

I didnt care about the truck, but wanted to fix his trailer. I called my auto insurance agent (State Farm), and he insured me that filing the claim would not affect my insurance rates due to it being a small claim on private property and not involving another vehicle. I filed the claim, got a check for about $1300 (after the $500 deductable), and went on with my life with no change to any of my insurance rates.

I sold the 08 Ultra, and later bought another 2007 Ultra. I called progressive to insure it.... and they tell me that my new rate is $955yr due to the "at fault collision" on my record? Geico... $922yr. State Farm (who says they cannot take the accident off my record even if I return the money)... $2,520yr!!!!!

After going through about 12 companies, I finally got a monthly policy from Allstate for $61mo (for minimum coverage) no PIP, no uninsured motorist, and $1000 deductables)..... but that's still insane to me, considering I used to pay about $22mo for great insurance with all the bells and whistles with $500 deductables....

Does anyone have any suggestions about what I should do now to get insured at a reasonable rate?

Bummer, I live in Maryland and pay 450 year. Went down in 05 and had a 3800.00 claim and State Farm never raised my policy. First and only claim also.

I've got Geico and was paying $308/yr in 2010 (Progressive wanted over $800/yr). Had an at-fault accident (in the Jeep, not on bike) that paid out a little over $10,000 in 2010. Dumped the Harley on some sand last spring and claimed a little under $7,000 to fix that. Oh yeah, my insurance went down to $265/yr for full coverage this year. I'll stick with Geico.

Insurance companies have been odd for me this year. Traded a 10 year old Road King I had insured with Progressive since new. Used to pay $450 a year for it, full coverage max everything etc. Bought a new Ultra this past weekend. Called my Progressive agent. They wanted $1100!!!!! I was like What!?!?!?!?!?!?!?

Called the local Geico office that the guy I know at the dealer recommended. Didn't even tell them Progressive quote, or who it was with, just gave them the coverage and amounts I wanted. Came in at $453 a year. Needless to say I switched to Geico.

Crazy stuff.

Never claim, unless you absolutely have too. Not a smart move. The 1300 dollar cheque you got cost you 200% more on your premium. Live and learn

I have progressive, I now pay $265 a yr. 2 years ago someone hit my bike in a parking lot and caused over $1k damage. I got it fixed and went on with life. My plan never went up, in fact when I started, it was about $330.00 a year.
I recently called them asking about what a new plan would be if I added a 09 roadking to my stable. they told me that I'd save money but it would be about 600 a year give or take $50 depending if I get a 09 or 10.
So something doesn't seem right for you

State Farm is a bunch of *** bandits. They do the most backstabbing stuff I have ever seen in a insurance company. There is a lawyer in Tyler, Tx named Keith Miller. He used to work for SF as an adjuster before he became a lawyer. He puts ads on the radio all the time obviously saying how he worked for them and hates them and if anyone needs help with a SF claim to give him a call. Back when I was 20 and on my parents insurance thru SF we had an issue and called him up.....he handled it for free and got it resolved in about 30 minutes.

I use Progressive right now but swap back and forth between them and Geico about once every other year as one wants me back and gives me a better deal. My insurance has went down every year since 06 when I bought my first HD. I pay $67/month for full coverage on my 09 Streetglide, 2010 Polaris RZR S and 2008 Arctic Cat 650H1 ATV

first thing is you filed a claim for in reality, $1, 000 so now you will have a 1000 claim on your insurance record for 3 years, granted if you stay with stae farm your vehicle insurance may not go up- but say after 2 -3 years you decide your paying to much for insurance and want to shop around to find a better rate, which you should be able to, your now going to be penalized on your claim,

and as you see way more than the 1000 you tried to save your self, you thought that your saving money but in the long run is or will cost you more, for years, ha ha I see it all the time and tell people to not file claims unless there more that $2,500 dollars after deductible,

the days of a free ride are over, but some people cant be told, so now your paying 700 + dollars more a year for the next 3 years, do the math,

get ready for another change in home owners insurance, because the day of the 500 dedc is slowly going bye bye as well and there starting to add a 1% deductible to the wind and hail claims now also- so if your house is valued at least $200,000 your hail deductible is $2,000

just sayin,

You guys all have it cush, I'm 30 perfect driving record, and I pay $149 per MONTH for my '07 Street Bob. ****ing SGI and their crown corporation monopoly, they jack motorcycle premiums across the board this year, $350 more this year between both my bikes. Why O Why can't we have privatized Auto Insurance here in SK!!!
