Default Insuring a Custom?

My trike is a Harley Replica. The vin number is only 8 digits given by the state of Iowa when it was born. I tried progessive and allstate but they do not insure customs without a manufactures vin number. I paid $559 last year and this years bill came in at a whopping $2744.00. It comes due in a couple weeks so it time to move on to someone else. Is anyone else out there insuring their custom and with what insurance company?

Hate to say it, HDTrike, but when you get something that is "unique", you'll pay more for insurance. The companies have no information on how to do the rating.

Try calling and asking for some type os "stated value" policy. I'd try Markel. GEICO actually asks for the value of the bike and accessories (if I remember correctly).

Good luck.

Try Safeco. You can add a dollar amount to fit your needs. I have over $10k in mods on my bike and its like another 10 - 20 dollars a month.

Default What I know right now

I spent hours searching and calling and this is what I know so far.
Insuring a kit bike or home built bike is tough going.
Markel Insurance is the only folks I have found offering full coverage.
A few insurance companies will insure but for Liability Only.
Safeco said No Customs.
The Gecko at Geico told me to go away.
American Home does not want custom bike buisiness.
Progressive just laughed.
Foremost Insurance dont do that no more.
State Farm told me to take a hike.
Dairyland wants my buisiness but not for my bike
Harley Davidson - No Thank You
A large handfull of local Agents politely declined my buisiness.
All State closed their hands when I came thru the door.
Maybe we a sticky as this could get uglier in another year or two.

Interesting. Did you renew this year?

That is the ticket, there has got to be one of them greedy robbers out there that want to make a little money rather than scare you away with a huge bill.

A different agent won't help. Try Foremost insurance, which in most areas is sold through Farmers Insurance. You should also call a few custom shops and find out where thy insure their bikes.

I know first hand, because I was trying to get automotive insurance, and was looking at State Farm for a quote, the agent I went to first told me that "maybe you should find insurance somewhere else", so I did, at the State Farm agent less than 3 block from the first one. Every business has the right to refuse service to anyone, maybe they didn't really want his money.
