What does your owner's' manual say? It is a good place to look for this kind of information.

Start with 4 qts and then might need to top off with another 1/2 qt. After a good ride, check it. Half way up the dots is a good place to be.

M-8 oil capacity is a mystery for the ages.

I’ve done six oil changes on M-8’s.

My latest conclusion is that 4 gts about does it.

BUT, none of those were 117’s.

I don't get it..owned 5 M8s now over 200,000 miles of DIY oil changes..it's no mystery, or rocket surgery, just follow simple oil change instructions from the OMs is all anyone needs

He asked how much they hold.
I said 4 quarts in my experience, but my prelude seemed to concern you.
Do you have a different answer?

My SGS and my Heritage both get 4.5 quarts and this puts the level dead on the full mark of the dipstick.

Yes, I run them at the full mark, and no I don't get oil misting out of the air cleaner.

the specs / capacities for the oil cooled and twin / center cooled remain unchanged since the M8 inception .. 5.2 quarts and 5.0 quarts respectively .. this information has been in the Owners Manuals for 8 years now .. a real mystery eh?

That is not the correct fill per the service manual instructions, and in my experience would overfill by a quart. Or more.

Edit to add- If you were being intuitive you would understand his question, as I did. And I expect you did.

initial fill for changes and capacity are two different things and both outlined in the owners manuals as I have been trying to explain. You said op asked how much they “hold”. That means capacity. If only owners could simply read and comprehend we wouldn’t be having these discussions
