Default New style M8 oil filter

Down anyone know the definitive reason Harley specifies a bigger oil filter?

Speculation has it that the larger capacity oil filter is better able to handle the increased flow of the M8 oil pump. Kinda makes sense considering the larger oil capacity in general and the use of oil cooling etc. on many of the M8 engines.

In any case, a larger oil filter is usually a good thing. I'm pretty sure the new M8 oil filter is larger than the cute little oil filter used on my 2019 5.7 Hemi V-8 in my pick-up truck....

You will not get the definitive reason on the forum, only opinions.

Unless someone here works in the engineering dept at the MoCo and was involved in the decision...

The slightly larger oil filter is a good thing, in my opinion. The service bulletin is self explanatory.

Interestingly enough, however, my local dealer says the black, longer filter is back-ordered for months! Bought a chrome one to change my oil before putting my bike to sleep for the winter.

I, too, got that line from 4 local dealers. That's probably the best thing to tell customers when you've got a crap ton of the old ones in inventory. I bought several new ones from New Castle HD online, and had 'em here in 2 days.

As for the filters, themselves, I don't know if they make any difference, but I figure they won't be worse than the previous ones..

I bought one from Rossmeyer in Ormond Beach yesterday. They had a case of them.

Because the pressure regulator is between the pump and the filter and a restriction in the filter lowers the pressure actually delivered to the engine. A regulator between the filter and pump is among the dumber things I've seen an engineer do.
