thanks...any initial thoughts on why the ECM change? understand too early in the game obviously..so maybe the question should be..after 4 MY did you have any thoughts on the ECM that was introduced for the M8s, i.e; issues / concerns / shortcomings, etc. that may have prompted the change? maybe it's as simple as advancements in electronics technology has been the fastest moving its ever been over the last decade

to discourage using aftermarket tuners is my guess. Or make it harder to program tuners that will work with the new ecm.

good point..come to think of it..over the last 4 years we've heard of about every conceivable problem the M8s have had, but the 'brain' being problematic wasn't one of them that I recall

There are two main considerations; costs (actually cost savings) and emissions standards and compliance. The primary factor for the ECM change is very likely Euro 5 emissions standards. While aftermarket tuning may be a concern its nowhere near large enough factor to make a hardware change of this scope. On that note the Delphi MT22 ECM is actually a pretty widely used piece of hardware, depending on the chipset they are using I expect aftermarket tuning should be pretty straight forward.

Why upgrade your laptop? Same idea.

well if they are purposefully coding ecm modules to try and prevent third party products from working, then eh. Not good. I dont buy a laptop and then set it up so I can't use third party text editors....

The problem with that comparison is that your third party text editor won't get Dell or HP into a multi-million dollar quagmire with Uncle Sam and the EPA.

And now that the Dems appear to have full control over the Legislative and Executive branches in Washington, you can bet that all the regulatory reductions that happened from 2017-2020 will be reinstated with a vengeance- and companies that produce internal combustion engines will be targets.
