MY 2021 FLH/FLT hardware updates & changes
#11
If you look back over the years of the Delphi EFI systems on HD bikes, the ECM changes occur roughly every 4 model years. Now that is not a hard fast rule but the first ECM's were 2001, then they were changed in 2004 then again in 2008 then again in 2011 and again in 2012 and again in 2014. A minor update/change was made in 2017. What this tells me is we are long past due for a new ECM as the last new one was in 2014 and I've been expecting it for a few years now. The fact that it there now, just means they most likely upgraded the electronic parts being use to something that's more modern than the current product. If you look just at cell phone in the last 5 years and how much they have changed in that time you should get the idea. Electronics today have a life cycle of about 5 years before they are being changed out and that's just the way it is. So this has nothing to do with a problem yet just the opposite and since its all new, there most likely is going to be some issues that will have to get resolved in the new ECM after its out in the field for the first several month! Since HD has announce to all it dealers there tuning product will not be coming out until late February early March timeline tells me there are still working on it too. So I would not expect any aftermarket tuning for the 2021 anytime soon, as everyone is going to have to start working from an all new spot and who know what they may or maynot have done.

It is what we have been doing for the past for the past 35+ years so I hope that allows us to get in and get it done quickly. I do not believe it's going to be easy as the car world has done plenty of things to make it much hard for us but I hope having that knowledge helps us along the way. The controller that has been in the Delphi ECM has basically not changed and I expect it to be in this new one, since the one they have been using is over 25 years old! It would be crazy for them to use it over again in a new ECM and the newer ones in the car/truck world have gone to muti-core processor years and years ago. There are plenty of them that are out there today to choose from that have been tailored just for use in this field so I expect it to one of those. Only time will tell but its going to be a lot of work no matter what it is, but it would be nice if they used one we already have some back-round with!

As I stated earlier in this thread its more about the timing of electronics than anything else. What they have been using is very old by electronics standards. There are so many new regulations coming in the future that are already on the books worldwide, they were just not going to be able to get there with what they had. The automotive side has been so far ahead of what HD has been using and there is plenty for them to choose from The question is what has Delphi picked to put inside the HD version as there are several MT22 units that have been used by other companies and from what we've seen they are not all the same internally. If anyone really wants too, all you need to do is google "Delphi MT22" and you can see various versions of the unit that are already on the market.

2017 Disabling the BAS was easy. Just about any of the units on the market could do it. 2018 change came quietly but there. Some of the functions could be changed but would reset themself right back to factory. The BAS was one of them. Dealing with that now on a 2020.
Daytona VTwin would do it , but no longer can and several other things can not be changed. Spoke with them . They are looking for a work around but don't expect an answer for some time.
I can not verify it but two INDY's told me the Centurion will no longer make some of the changes either. But their web sight says they can. there may be a few surprises in the 2021.

While the 2021 bikes still use 12mm O2's with the same M12-1.25 thread pitch, there are some differences, the 2021 the sensors appear to have identical 4 pin connectors to the earlier models however the sensors themselves have some physical differences, the new sensors have a 17mm hex head and also a slightly larger body. Very likely functional differences between them as well. So far it looks like all of our Jackpot systems will carry over for the touring bikes, however i'm not sure if this new sensor will fit some brands of pipes that have the formed/stamped welded-in 12mm bungs such as S&S where it's already a tight fit with the 14mm head.
