After looking at Webster's dictionary, both Damper and Dampener are nouns. They both mean basically the same thing, something that damps or depresses. Damper is the only one that mentions a moveable plate for regulating draft in a ventilation system.
Dampen, which is a verb as is damp, can also refer to making something moist, but it also means to dull or deaden. So it looks like they are interchangeable. I stand somewhat corrected.

"A damper is a noun or object, dampener is the verb or action. A vibration damper is used as a dampener for vibrations."
True, though that "Dampener" can go either way (noun/verb) depending on how you use it in a sentence it, but it's often used as a Verb (action) for the word Damper.
For the record, I wasn't correcting any one person. Just showing how interesting it is for some to argue about what is essentially the same word.

I`m not referring to a damper used in a fireplace, it is also a term that is used in engineering.
Forget websters, look in an engineering text for the description of damper as it applies to vibration...
It won`t be called a dampener.
Since this is a tech forum, I just thought it would be ok to use the correct terminology.
