Clutch Limits

Well, for comparison, a few days ago I changed out my clutch pack with new. OEM Harley clutch pack, $199. Bike has 30k on it, and I am rough on a clutch. I ride mostly two-up, and am in a lot of lane-splitting and stop-and-go. I give no mercy to a clutch, and I expect to change out a clutch every 40k or so. This particular oem clutch, though, was subjected to enormous slipping abuse during a trip last year to San Francisco. Hills. And where we stayed had a driveway that was a good 45-degree angle. I decided I'd do it earlier than normal, and was curious what the old plates looked like.
They are fine. Worn, but not particularly damaged. Some of the steels had some grooves in them. The friction plates had plenty of material left. I put a micrometer on a few spots and got around .150" with .143 being the minimum.
The old clutch was working perfectly, though I was getting a sort of plinking noise at times during slowing down, a noise that seems to have disappeared with the old clutch plates. Maybe they were so worn they were flopping around in there. BTW the new clutch is a Screaming Eagle product with 10 plates rather than the stock nine plates. So, and upgrade. And it works perfectly, just like the old one did.
Anyways, long story short: Maybe 50k is reasonable to go, with a changout point that doesn't involve the old clutch falling apart and leaving you on the side.

I installed the SE clutch springs rated at 1275nm. Clutch is now good for a lot more than stock. There is a sheet on the HD site that gives max torque figures for the different spring sets available.
When I ordered them at my local parts counter, they said they had NEVER sold any before. Only $24.95 retail.
Great side effect is the clutch lever engagement area changed. Pretty sure I barked the tire when I hit third gear too! I am not easy on bikes.

Need to be careful on this question as not all stock M8 clutches are the same. The 17 and 18 MY's for 107 & 114 all got a 9 disk clutch BUT the Police models, trikes and CVO got the 10 disk clutch stock. I have been told they switch to the 10 disk in all models in 2019 but I do not know that for sure. So there are two stock clutches and the SE replacement is the Stock 10 disk and what funny is when you try to buy a stock replacement from HD all you can buy is the 10 disk one. It's been this way since back in 2017 when they first came out. There is also different springs being used as well. The stock M8's had a white paint on the springs but the Twin Cams used a red paint on those and they are a stiffer spring. So you have two different stock sets of springs as well. Then there is the SE springs as well if you want a little more holding power.
