New SE Clutch Surge
Hey Everyone Here is my dilemma, so I replaced my stock clutch (9 plate) in my 2018 RoadGlide special 107 at 12,000 miles with the ScreamingEagle (10 plate) clutch with the 1200 springs. I soaked the plates over night before the install. the first ring the seating ring looked new, the second ring the pressure ring looked new I put the the small disk first then plate, the second small disk and plate, then the larger plates with the small one again on the end just like the diagram shows in the manual. everything went well no problems, no leaks no issues. I torqued the 3 spring bolts down evenly at 110inch lbs ,. I filled the primary with HD primary oil.. the clutch handle feels great, the engagement feels great .. now when I get on it first gear, second gear i might get a clutch surge like the handle is pulled in real fast and let out ... what is wrong? is there something i did wrong in installing this ?? need some help thanks guys

Sounds like you're getting a momentary slip of the clutch in first and second gears when you're getting on it. I am not familiar with a hydraulic clutch setup but I assume there is a clutch basket adjustment just like the cable clutch is on my Softail. If there is you might have too little clearance with the adjuster when you adjusted the clutch after replacing it.

I used 30oz of HD Formula +, The plates and friction plates all went in nicely no sloppy play in the seating. first the seating washer then the contour washer then #1 narrow Friction plate first then the steel plate then in that order till the end. then the next two Narrow friction plates at the end so this order :
NFP-SP-FP-SP-FP-SP-FP-SP-FP-SP-FP-SP-FP-SP-FP-SP-NFP-SP-NFP
NP=Narrow Friction Plate
SP=Steel Plate
FP=Friction Plate
I Torqued the 3 spring bolts to 110inch lbs evenly
NFP-SP-FP-SP-FP-SP-FP-SP-FP-SP-FP-SP-FP-SP-FP-SP-NFP-SP-NFP
NP=Narrow Friction Plate
SP=Steel Plate
FP=Friction Plate
I Torqued the 3 spring bolts to 110inch lbs evenly

So it sounds like the assist part of the slip assist clutch is not working right. That is why I asked where the 3rd narrow plate was. When you engage the clutch, it slips some before grabbing in the lower gears. The upper gears use transfer more torque so the clutch problem does not occur. While I would look into make sure the damping spring and plate are assembled correctly. Might be worth trying the thicker damping spring seat that is used on the later M8s. (37000295) Another thing that I would look at is the assist ramps on the pressure plate and clutch hub. It's possible that there might be a worn section on the ramp that could be causing the pressure plate to hang. A wild assed guess is that the ramps wore in some and when you disassembled the clutch, you did not assemble the pressure plate in the exact orientation as the way it had been run for the first 12000 miles. You have a 1 in 3 chance of getting it the same. Looks at any wear patterns on the ramps and try to match them up.
I might be simply worthwhile to ride the bike and see if it gets better. Of course only do this if you feel the issue does not affect safety.
