2019 M8 114 Slip-ons, no tuner, no problem
#31
Just finished my Stage 1 with the SEPST, High Flow AC and Street Cannons. My new Road Glide runs great. The dealer loaded the tune as it was included in my price. That said, I’ve ordered the cable to do some Smart Tune sessions and watched the training videos a few times. After also researching the FP3 and PV the SEPST seems needlessly complicated. Maybe too much information. So I have a basic understanding of how to do the Smart Tune. My question is will I get prompts during the process instruction wise like with the FP3 and basic instructions? I mean it sounds like connect the bike to VCI, ride, download to PC then flash to bike. Just looking for a bit of hand holding I guess.

Once you have the software and updated calibrations, you flash the unit and your bike. Now you could stop there with no problems if the calibration you loaded matches your bike eg. Stage 1 for your year, model, etc.
If you want more, you can then put the VCI into record mode and collect some real world data. The VCI has limited buffer so you will fill it up in about 15-20 mins of actual recording time. You can start and stop the recording by pressing a button on the VCI which remains cabled to your bike while you ride. Once it’s full, you then reconnect PC to pull the data off the VCI. You will have the option to let the software automatically merge your data with the existing base calibration. Then all you have to do is “upload” the newer tune or calibration to your bike’s ECM with the press of a button. Easy peasy.
Rinse and repeat a few times under various riding conditions and you’re good to go until your next major engine related alteration, if ever.
If you just wanna git er done, I’d just make sure your laptop has plenty of juice and just connect up out on the road to dump recorded data and then merge it all at once when you’ve got a few decent samples. If you’re comfortable enough, you can just flash the ECM on the side of the road, but to be honest, Windows Laptops are involved so might be better to have a beer in hand in your garage just in case
The only time when this is kind of delicate is during the actual flashing or upload to the ECM. You mustn’t loose power or connection during that critical minute or two. The system will make that moment clear when the time comes. Whole thing is finished in just a couple minutes.

Yes. There is a tuning guide which pretty much walks you through the steps. Plenty of good video and help available too. It’s really no big deal, just a little clunky and primitive for present day compared to, say FP3.

your "dealer" is FOS..installing an emissions defeating device of any kind is a violation of your limited powertrain warranty..read that section in your Owners Manual..better yet, read it to the dealership person and ask them their interpretation which is clear as day to anyone with half a brain
