I think people missed my point....The OP came on asking about Ohlins which are generally the best you can get. My first post was to point out that if you are looking for a comfort shock for "the old lady"...you probably don't need to spend the money on Ohlins...but I digress.
In some respects you are correct. In some respects, Ohlins, Fox, RWD and even Works are not needed for a good touring shock. IMO most Baggers don't need a gas charged shock. A well constructed / tuned shock like the old Koni or the newer Ikon would be fine if set up correctly. The bike typically doesn't get run hard enough to overheat the shock unless someone is trying to ride a fully loaded bike over a washboard for 20 miles.. Still any of the gas shocks can fill the bill. Nice thing about Ohlins, Fox and RWD is that they are configurable and can be made to work very well for touring if done right. When it comes to motorcycles, most like to buy "trick" stuff. Even if it's not setup correctly..
