Default I may be off on the pin count. It is so small and I cannot see well.

It just like the headunit from the 2018. It has voice controls, but they only work if you have a mic. But everything else on the radio works just fine (maps, radio, etc) without a mic.
I took an old wired headset that came with my 2016 Road Glide and took it apart. It has a little circuit board about 1/2 inch by 1.inch soldered between pins 1 and 4. I cut the boom mic off and the little speakers right where they were soldered on to the 7-pin din cable. This left the cable with the little circuit card hanging off of it. I plugged that into the 7-pin din connector on the gas tank of my 2019 Road Glide, plugged my iPhone into the usb connector in the fairing, and turned on the bike. Et voila! The CarPlay menu came up. Connected my AirPods to my phone and could give Siri commands to the apps. All the toggle switches worked on the handle bars. Could hear music and pod casts through my earbuds and through the boombox speakers. I don’t know what is on the little board. Probably tiny diodes and resisters. Of course the intercom function doesn’t work without a mic. One could make a one inch long dongle by soldering the little board directly to a din connector. You could plug that in when you don’t have a passenger.

Lightbulb Car Play finally work (not ideal, but works)

With my RG 2019 CVO I receive also a SENA 20s that I do not want to use on my helmet, but I discover that this unit does not have to be paired to the speakers stuff to be able to be turned on and paired with the motorbike.
So I turn it on, paired with the bike and put it the case on my bike. When connecting the iPhone (via cable) to the bike, Car Play showed up !
It's not ideal solution because in a way or another a mic device (or associated) has still to be connected, but this does the job.

Even my cheapo bluetooth headphones(built in mic) work & allow Carplay to show up. So I found a very mini bluetooth speaker with mic that supposedly plays/works while charging on Amazon. For $9 I thought it was worth a try.

Hoping it works while charging (as reviewers said). If so, and it activates Carplay, I'll just tuck it away somewhere and leave it at that for the time being.

Default I’ve got it working with NO HEADSET!!!!!

Went into dealer after talking to a sales rep from Soundz, they do audio upgrades to Harley’s, and told them to hook up the digital technician and check off box for whim. I don’t have a whim installed, nor do I have the hard wire 7 pin for a headset. By telling the bike, either ecm or bcm (don’t know what the digitech actually communicates with), that a whim is installed it allows the CarPlay to work. Even if you bought a whim from dealer and brought it home to install, you’d have to go back to dealer and have them flash the radio for it to work. By just flashing the radio and “lying” to it about supposedly having a whim unit is all you need to do. Can’t take calls, can’t hear or respond to texts, but can use apple nav and anyother CarPlay comparable apps you have on your phone. I also feel like the sound quality is better as opposed to Bluetooth or even wired non-CarPlay of the music on my phone. I don’t want to talk on phone and don’t really care about texts while riding; I just wanted to use my wazes app for traffic and whatnot with the nav.

can we assume that if you were to plug in the headset that it now doesn’t work?

i honestly don’t know since I don’t have a hard wire to hook one up to and don’t have whim actually on bike so no way to pair a Bluetooth.

just call around to Harley dealers. They’re pretty much the only ones who have that digital technician program. First two that where closest to me said I’d have to wait till next week cause they were too busy. Then one said I’d have to pay for half an hours labor if they did it whether it worked or not. Found a dealer like 45 min from my house that said come on in now, did it for free just cause he was curious if it would really work or not. Now that he knows it will work, he can offer it to his people; assuming he wouldn’t get in trouble with Harley Corp if they found out (might affect actual whim or wired sales?)

FYI - This cheapo Bluetooth does work to activate CarPlay. Its about twice the size of my thumb.

Haven't tried the charge and play function, but it turns off after 5 minutes of inactivity according to the manual.
