From Breakout to RGS With Love
I traded my 2014 Breakout in on a new 2018 Road Glide Special about a month ago. I had just over 19,000 miles on her when I decided to roll the dice on the M8 platform. I absolutely LOVED my Breakout. But, my beloved wife was never fully comfortable on the Breakout for longer trips, as one can only imagine why.
I fell in love with the Breakout at first sight. It's easy to see why with that low, long stance and nice fat a$$. Over the years I modified the Breakout as much as I could to have a decent ride while 2 up. I always felt the bike lacking in certain "functional" areas when pushing the long haul. We all know the Breakout isn't made for this style of riding. I knew all roads lead to a bagger.
About two years ago, I started toying with the idea of getting a bagger. It would be between 2 bikes. Road King Special or the Road Glide Special. In 2018, HD released the RGS in Bonneville Salt Pearl. Coming from a Morocco Gold Pearl, the Bonneville Salt Pearl was the definite choice of color as well as all the creature comforts that come with the shark nose.
Sealing the deal was the test ride. The Road Glide was so easy to turn into a corner and the fall-in was a very welcoming feeling in comparison to the Breakout. Pushing the twisties, cruising at 85 on the freeway and not getting beat to death by the wind was awesome! The only thing lacking on the Glide was the suspension. My wife and I are not very large people, but we're not twigs either. The rear suspension was a bit harsh and would easily bottom out on the terrible Louisiana roads we have. After a set of Ohlins #3-#3 shocks and an Ultimate seat, this bike is what we needed. 1,600 trouble free, exhilarating miles and looking forward to many, many more!
