Installation of S&S M8 cam plate & pump
We are installing one of the new M8 cam plate & oil pump kits from S&S Cycle in a 2017 Road Glide. We're taking plenty of pictures and documenting the install. To get started we will post some images of the components we are working with. This is the S&S oil pump & cam plate for 2017-up Oil Cooled M8 engines, part # 310-0998.
Cam plate, assembly lube, and hydraulic tensioner block off plate (for use with gear drive cam)
Oil pump, assembly lube, orings, & hardware
In typical S&S fashion the kit includes comprehensive instructions as well as a complete breakdown of the components including part numbers

The S&S pump has a gerotor or pump for each pickup which makes it more unlikely the sump side will lose its prime. The money invested in it when doing any upgrades or even if it is your only upgrade is well spent in my opinion.
On the TwinCam they managed to counter this by making the sump pickup longer and smaller which also helped counter the variances in crankcase pressure caused by the pistons going up and down. The M8 just has a big hole on the right case where the oil pump connects. Harley has tried making the oil pump pickup smaller, whether that is working I can't say. Also, that's why if you idle it on the side stand there may be some extra oil collect in the sump. The S&S won't keep that from happening, but it should clear it soon after you stand the bike up straight.

The instructions do state to disassemble and clean the new oil pump, we are primarily looking for any debris or chips that may be present. The pump in this example was immaculate. As far as the pressure relief valve we are leaving it in the same state S&S sets them up for this initial install.
