Default Running RPM

So my new bike is at the dealer having the rear head replaced. A cylinder fin was damaged on delivery. While waiting for the head to come in I kept my new bike and rode it carefully breaking the motor in and never exceeded 3000 RPM but also never lugged the motor. In talking to service today they asked questions about torque delivery etc and break in, I told them I don't lug my engines, and I ride in the 2300 to 2800 RPM range and haven't exceeded 3000 RPM yet. They then said I should never run in that range on a new motor consistently only during up shifts or the motor would not break in correctly and would forever use oil due to scored cylinders? I varied my speed and mixed it up in town and out. Is there something about an M8 motor I'm missing? I would have thought anything below that range would do more harm as I always considered that lugging the motor. M8's must be different?

How the heck do you NOT ride in the 2500 rpm range?? I mean unless you always ride in 6th gear and never on the highway, 2500 to 3000 is just naturally where the engine seems to run at most any cruising speed/gear.....at least for me anyway.

I think your guy is full of it.

the key word is consistently . you should vary the RPMs frequently without either lugging or over revving . i don't think you have to worry unless you get on the highway and run at one speed in the same gear for a while .

sounds like you followed your owners manual break in procedure and did nothing bad for the engine..these things aren't made of styrofoam and balsa wood..you're fine and can now run it higher briefly..just continue to follow the break in instructions and good to go.."score the cylinders" that's a good one

I find the "forever burn oil" comment hilarious. Ask them to show you the bulletin where it says 1QT/1500 miles is acceptable. A sad (but true) joke. So do they mean you could burn more than that? I find that remarkable.

I've never babied an engine on break in, I just ride them easy and occasionally get into it strong, but never bouncing off the tach. Never had any issues and motors always have run well with no issues. I figure if it's going to break, better to have it break before I get too attached to it.

Just follow what it says in the manual, mine hasn’t burnt a drop of oil in almost 10000 miles. Maybe I misunderstood something but I’ve gotta agree that there’s no way to stay out of the 2300-3000 range.....that IS the range if your moving. Pretty goofy statement if you ask me
