Default Oil Light Issue

I've got a 2017 Ultra Limited that is stock other than the RCX slip ons. I've had it since June 13 and haven't had a spot of trouble with it over 10,000 miles until this Tuesday.

I came out of work and started the bike up headed the half mile to the gas station on the corner. Just after I pulled out of the parking lot at work I noticed the oil light was still on. When I stopped a minute later at the gas station the light was still on. I fueled up and checked the oil, it was just about at the full hot mark. Started the bike, light went out like it should and stayed out all the way home and then into work the next day. I figured it must have been some kind of fluke.

Wednesday it was fine into work, back home, over to the next town for a bike night and then to a restaurant. When I went to leave the restaurant the oil light stayed on after starting. I shut it down, looked things over to make sure there wasn't oil pouring out of it or anything obvious. Turned the ignition back on and when I started it the light went out like it should and stayed out for 40 miles back home.

Thursday the bike was fine on the way to work. After work the light stayed on so I stopped and shut down, checked oil level, checked for leaks or disconnected wires but found nothing. Restarted and the light stayed on so I limped it immediately to the dealer. Of course when I started it to pull around the side of their building to service the light went out like it should and they could not get the thing to come on with multiple startups, shutdowns and some riding. The light was fine for me on the way home and then out to dinner and back.

This morning I started the bike and the light stayed on. I shut down, turned ignition off and then back on, started the bike and the light went out. I videoed this sequence just to make sure the dealer doesn't think I'm a nutjob...lol.

So...the light only seems to be on when it fails to go out after starting, it hasn't come on at any random point while riding. If the light stays on after starting it seems to just stay on steady until the bike is shutdown. I've seen oil lights in cars that flicker at idle and then go out as the rpm increases, not sure if the ones on these bikes would work that way as well but this one stays on bright and steady no matter what.

The dealer ordered a new pressure sensor and advised me to call them if I have any more trouble.

What does everybody think it might be? And should I continue to ride the bike or be very worried and park the thing until they can get a new sensor in?

Please let us know how this turns out. I had a similar experience and dealer tested oil pressure switch and circuit and said it was within spec. Told me to return if it repeats as they could not duplicate.

Check your trouble codes and see if it's throwing a P0522. That's the code for low voltage in the oil pressure circuit. It can also be because of low oil, which you ruled out.

The dealer said that there were no codes and that there wouldn't be any codes set from just the oil light coming on. They said that the check engine light would also have to come on for any codes to be set.

You would think the Dealer service dept. would at least check the oil pressure before ordering a sensor.

Mine did that. They replace the sensor. Did it again. They replaced the oil pump. Make them do both. Not a new issue and HD does know of it. Make the dealer call HD.

Might be an oil pump. Let us know what they figure out.

It’s not an oil pressure problem, it’s a problem with the computer that reads the sensor.
My 2017 has had that happen 6 or 7 times in 18000 miles. It’s pretty random, the light and the readout in the radio screen do not “see” the oil pressure. Shut the bike down, including the ignition switch, restart and all is fine.
The dealer nor anyone I know of has a fix. Probably software though.

The light did it again after work today. Started the bike and the light stayed on...shut it completely off and restarted, the light went out and stayed out all the way home. I checked for DTCs when ingot home and it is showing P0523.

The bulk of oil light issues I've read about on these bikes are more often electrical in nature, not mechanical. Oil pump issues were related only to the sumping issues, not low oil pressure.

Interesting comment. The dealer did check 3 items on my King:1) resistance of pressure switch - it was deemed ok because it measured 5 ohms or less, 2) the circuit was properly grounded, 3) the ECM was tested ok.

Since your bike has a heads up display it could be software. In my case it's just a simple circuit. But mine will throw a code WITHOUT the engine light coming on or the oil light. I was told to return to dealer next occurance and they will call HD for instructions.
