2017 Ultra transmission fluid migration experience
I bought a 2017 FLHTK on 7/16. Thanks to this forum (https://www.hdforums.com/forum/milwa...ion-fluid.html), I kept a close eye on the transmission fluid level. I took it to my dealer for its 1000 mile service. I told them to check the primary level before draining it as I've had to top off the transmission fluid twice and I've heard of a migration issue on some forums.
They called me back and said the primary level was high. They called the motor company they are shipping parts to fix the issue. The motor company seems to be aware of the issue, but there probably has not been enough claims to warrant a recall.
The dealer completed the 1000 mile service and I picked up the bike. Since I use my bike as my daily commuter, I will schedule the warranty service in October when I'll be at the HOG rally in Maui. Until then they suggested I continue to check the levels and adjust it as necessary.
If you have a 2017 M8, I suggest you check your fluid levels more frequently than normal and if you notice a migration issue bring it to the attention of your dealer as the motor company seems to be authorizing the repair for this issue.

Certainly not the right way, but I'd check the trans and fill it to the previous full mark noting how many ounces I put in (if it needed fluid). I'd assume (I know, I know) that the lost ounces were in the primary. If it were only a few ounces and I wasn't having any shifting or clutch issues, I'd leave it until more was in there.

were both times checking done after the 500 mile break in, which assumes you kept it mellower in rpm range, then some pouring the coals to it rpms for the next 500 until the 1k discovered the issue, or a combo of before and after break in?

I think it's worth noting that my bike was part of the last of the 2017 production runs. It was shipped on June 9th out of York PA. Which tells me they haven't fully identified the cause of the issue. But it does seem odd that not everyone is affected. I don't know, maybe the ones having issues were assembled on a different line at the Tomahawk plant or with a bad set of seals? As more and more are reported, I'm sure the motor company will find the common thread as to the cause.
