Default What is a Good Price for a new 2017 SGS?

I have been thinking about buying a new 2017 SGS. I am happy with my current bike (2013 SG), but would love to get one with the new engine! I am interested in a black denim (MSRP $24,199 + $435 freight + $?? other dealer costs), which would be MSRP of $24,634 + $?? other dealer costs. So, what should I expect the out the door price would be, excluding taxes and registration costs? Also, would waiting until the 2018s arrive at the dealerships before trying to negotiate a better price for a 2017?

I would also be trading in my 2013 SG with about 10k miles on it. I did a quick check on Kelley Blue Book and the trade in value is $13,500. There is a few thousand dollars of profit for the dealer in selling my bike at retail, I would think. I wonder what the dealership would offer?

I was originally thinking that I would wait a couple of years and then pick up a gently used 2017 in 2019 or 2020, but it might just make sense to bite the bullet now if the buyers are seeing decent prices on 2017s now.

So, thoughts? And before I get several responses saying, "go check it out at the dealership," I plan to do so but wanted some information on what other buyers have been seeing before I go there.

If you can wait, I would definitely wait till the 18's come out for a 17. Right now, dealers aren't cutting much deals on 17's except for 1st service, some free stuff etc. There will be quite a few 17 SGS around come August. They are probably one of the most produced bikes in the HD line up.

The real question (for me anyway) was I wanted the new motor and I wanted it before the next round of emissions standards come in (2020 EUR5). In the near future, ALL bikes (especially V-Twins) will have to be water cooled to meet the forthcoming standards the EPA will impose. More complicated EFI systems, more sensors, more crap---

I'd wait for the 2018's at this point..they may fix a thing or two that they realize are issues but not admitting at this time..it's possible they will have improved

It wouldn't hurt to see how far you can get. If it were me, I'd work the new bike without mention of a trade. I would offer $1.5K off MSRP, plus no freight or set up fees with 1k and 5k service tossed in. If you get that done, then you can talk trade and know exactly what you paid for the new bike and exactly what you got on your trade. You can always walk away and come back when the '18 come out. The math starts to get fuzzy when you are working strictly out the door numbers, so I would avoid that.

^^^^^ This!! (Read the Gear Oil Level) Thread... By no means trying to scare you from doing what you want, but things like this "If defined by the M/C as an issue" should be addressed in later model years...

Thanks for all the replies.

The idea of waiting until the 18s hit the dealers makes some sense, if I can find a left over 17 that I want. Not sure if the reduction in price would be enough to compensate for a bike that is one year older model. I can never figure out if it is a good deal to buy a left over!

The fluid moving from the gearbox to the primary on the 17 M8s seems like a potentially big issue. If the MoCo is still not publicly acknowledging the issue, is it even likely they would make a change for the 18's engine? I would think that would have to already be figured out, if the "fix" is to be shipped in engines on bikes arriving at dealerships in August, no? If they do anything at all, it might not be until the 19s??

Yes. There could be all sorts of liability issues in acknowledging issues in the '17s (if there really are issues.. IDK). But yes, they could very easily address problems, when building the new model year bikes, that were discovered in the '17s, without publicly acknowledging that the issue exists.

What would their lawyers be telling them to do?

Here's a novel suggestion: Get the best OTD price you can and enjoy the ride.
