Default 1000 mile service...

So just at 1k now and of course need to get the service done.

I plan on switching to Amsoil already which my dealer does stock.

The big question is spend the 450.00 at the dealer for the "oil change" or do it at home for 97.00?

I know they are "checking" nuts and bolts but come on is it really worth 450.00?

If you have time and can do basic maintenance it's not worth it.
Doing it at home has no effect on warranty claims etc, so either way is fine.

Here is a checklist of everything that is done for all of the servicing. One of the forum members posted it a while ago and I saved it for future use. As stated before, if you're handy and you have the time you can do all of your own servicing and still maintain your warranty. Just keep a service log and you'll be fine. Hope the checklist helps, it did for me.

Do the fluids and filter yourself and then take it to them for the rest. If they try to charge you anything more than 1/2 hour of labor, they're screwing you. Then you can have a receipt saying they checked everything.

Do it yourself, I highly doubt they check all those torque settings anyway. I just helped a buddy with his 1,000 mile on a streetglide. Get the K&N filter 171B from Amazon, about $8. The factory filter is on very tight. I had to jam a screwdriver in it to get it to spin off. The K&N filter has the nut on the end for easier removal next oil change.

I am taking mine in this morning. They said the 1k calls for 2 hours of labor. I know for a fact my dealer checks all torque and follows the service schedule.

I always do it myself and use the attached to record services.

I did my own and I am glad I did. When I drained the fluids all three drain plugs were not very snug. The torque values are the same as my Twin cams so I know the feel of what it takes to pull them. I changed grips as soon as I got home so the torque on the switch housings and master cylinder screws were good. The rest is cake if you have the belt tension tool. I use Amsoil in the engine and had a full case at home so I used it. Bought the filter from the dealer and a quart of formula+ for the primary, I had some Spectro Platinum Six Speed Gear oil for the tranny and I am good to go. I used my calibrated Snap On torque wrenches for the job.

I like knowing that I used the fluids that I trust, and that the job was done correctly, because I did it myself.

I am the opposite of most it would seem. I want someone else to do my maintenance on my scoot. Someone I trust of course but I don't trust myself enough to not miss something. On my Dyna I had the dealer do 1k service and my indy do others after that. Will do the same most likely with my M8.
