Default HD Brand Stage 1 Impact to Warranty

I've heard the horror stories about modifications to M8s that void the factory warranty.

But I'm curious if any knows this? I've been playing with the "Build Your Own" feature on the Harley website for an M8 Road King. One of the packages has SE Street Canons, SE Air Cleaner, and SE Street Tuner. Does anyone know if this doesn't void the factory warranty, since they offer it on their build site.

As long as you stay with SE parts including the SE tuner you stay in warranty. Most dealers have no issue if you do aftermarket exhausts even tuners, but HD made an agreement with the EPA that they would enforce EPA approved only parts to keep your warranty which the SE do comply with.
2017 is the first year this was in place and the word is dealers can get fined up to $30K for not complying.

You will be fine with that kit... the main thing is the SE Street Tuner.. which only allows for EPA approved tuning.

In the EPA agreement, the MoCo agreed to void any warranty claim on a bike with a non-EPA approved tune/tuner...

Been a lot of speculation, but now there's proof that the MoCo is taking the EPA agreement seriously.

On another post on this forum, a guy had an M8 with very low miles, developed some low oil pressure related problems that ruined the engine.

Mind you this is a known problem with a few early M8s. It has several possible causes, none of which has anything to do with the tune...

The dealer set up a warranty case to get his bike fixed, the MoCo had to approve the warranty repair, and the MoCo denied the warranty claim because the guy had an aftermarket tuner (FP3) on his bike.....

If you want the warranty, stick with the SE parts and SE tuner.... of course, once you no longer feel you need the warranty, there are a lot of aftermarket choices that will make the M8 run awesome.... not surprisingly, a lot of which has to do with a good non-EPA tune...

And keep in mind there are varying levels of warranty coverage depending on when you do the upgrades. Within 60 days of new bike purchase I believe offers the most coverage, somewhat limited after that

After going stage 1 and 2 in one visit myself, the biggest impact will be to your wallet.
Warranty will not void.

Not totally true. If you do stage 1 or Stage 2 post the 60 days from purchase and you have an extended warranty, you just voided that part of your extended warranty. Even if the dealer installed it and you used all SE EPA parts.

I am not saying to not modify your bike. Mine is and I couldn't be happier. Just don't make the assumption that having a dealer install SE parts makes everything OK!

just makes it EPA compliant and they have to stand behind the parts and labor of the install.

Exactly, for one year only. Not even for the balance of your factory warranty if you want to get technical.

My advice, put what you want on your bike and enjoy the hell out of it.
